I am in UK , hire car is a VW Passat diesel with stop start system.
This annoys me greatly! Car stops when I brake and starts again when I come off brake!! The noise of starter motor regularly is annoying. I cannt see how it is more economical?? And how long will starter motor/ring gear last ?? Cost to replace will out weigh fuel savings??? The dct box hasn't been a problem,,,

You can choose to deactivate/activate it at will in BMW, not sure about VW. I don't mind it. You can barely even hear the engine start in BMW and it starts instantaneously. If it saves fuel .... that's what it's about.

often stop/start is inhibited if the heater or AC is on.

It's noisy in this Passat annoyingly so,maybe it's because it's a hire car and been not looked after??? Works with heater on !! Cannt see how it's more economical?? Didn't it cause a crash in Vic , last year??

It's the AC that's inhibited, not the stop/start. In the BMW you hear the AC turn down to a lower rate but otherwise everything keeps functioning. It's bound to save fuel on a typical long idle at a traffic light stop.
Like everything nowadays on our high-tech starships on tyres, it'll be great while everything keeps working, otherwise just another thing to go wrong! But if we take that attitude we should be driving Model T Fords. Can you switch it on and off in the Passat? You should at least be given that option if the manufacturer has any sense. |

Yeah but what about the starter, surely that thing must get beefed up.
I too think its weird but for city commuters its not a bad thing. Id be nervous for a while wondering "when is the first time it wont start when I want it too". Is it to help pass some emissions reg's thing? Drop the carbon rating or something hippy like that?

You can switch it off but it comes back on everytime you restart.
My Mercedes switches off about 3 times with the mrs getting it in the garage, yes it is annoying...

Its all about getting those official fuel economy figures down as much as possible, thats all people and governments care about.

I found it quite weird on our new Mazda 3 company car. Simon is right though, it will soon be standard equipment on most new cars.

My concern is with stop start systems, it will be another thing to wait for when in a queue at the traffic lights, waiting for cars to restart after the driver suddenly wakes up that the traffic ahead is moving off.
Batteries are specially built for the stop start system, so will cost more, starter motors will cost more etc etc. I certainly wouldn't buy a car which has stop-start that cant be switched off. Last edited by Silver Ghia; 09-02-2015 at 12:28 PM. |

Not sure the big deal with VWs having these, because the gearbox will fail before anything else and will cost more to replace than what the car is actually worth anyway.

Skoda Superb, which is Passat equivalent, you can turn it off:
http://www.skoda.co.uk/models/hotspo...4-7f88289cf501 I'm sure this sort of shared technology would be the same across the VAG group. |

It will lead to greater traffic congestions. As I mentioned earlier, it will take longer for each car to move off from a standstill, thus the concertina effect will worsen.
Congestion is greatly reduced when cars behind each other ideally all move off at the same time. But that never happens because someone is looking at their mobile, or not looking at the traffic in front moving off. Ever waited in a queue at the traffic lights and noticed how long it takes before the car in front of you, which may be several cars behind the first, begins to move? That will only get worse with this stupid technology that manufacturers are shoving at us, so they can claim better fuel economy. And people forget the extra costs down the track. |

It doesn't take longer, it's completely instantaneous (at least in BMW). There might be a couple of seconds in it at most. And I've always been one for the Le Mans starts at lights so if anybody would notice I would

Can anybody confirm if Mazda's i-ELOOP stop/start system uses the starter motor to kick it over when it switches itself off?
Because I could have sworn I read an article that said, because it's direct injection and the tolerances are so low on the SKYACTIV engines, they can fire the piston at TDC and don't need the starter? |

Should be able to turn it off in all cars that have it I reckon. I imagine how annoying it would be in traffic where you stop for 5 seconds then move forward a car length then stop for 5 seconds and so on. Can't be saving much fuel In those situations.
I have been told is requires more fuel to start a car than it uses idling for a minute. Unless this new technology reduces the amount of fuel it uses to start an engine. |

Its an easy way for manufacturers to get their official economy ratings lower, because part of the Euro city economy tests is something like 10mins (dont know the actual number) of idling.
So dropping a few 100mls/100kms is quite easy to achieve.

I can imagine some of the comments about extra complexity, wear and cost would have also been made when good old simple and reliable crank handles began to be replaced by those new fangled key operated, battery powered starter motors... |

From this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Start-stop_system it's obvious that many manufacturers, including Ford, now offer it and they have varying approaches to managing the technology. My old 1984 Range Rover still had the crank handle hole through the front bumper and onto the engine! But they didn't include a crank handle in the tool kit! Needless to say, I started it by key. |
