If you didn't have car ramps, a trolley jack or car stands, what is the better option to get to work on your car?
Set of ramps? Or Trolley jack plus car stands? |

Trolley jack and stands - you can't remove the wheels if you have ramps.......

jack and stands is the best i think, some car's front bumper hit the ramp before it can get up.

Depends on what sort of work you're doing.
Jack and stands takes less space in the garage, but ramps are more convenient if you're just doing an oil change. Both have their own safety concerns.

Four ratchet stands and trolley jack. So you can get the car level with you underneath to do transmission and rear axle servicing.
When doing oil change you only need to get the front up high enough to get to the sump plug, then drop the car level again to drain if the plug hole is toward the front of the sump. Then raise it again to replace the filter and reinstall sump plug, then drop again to refill with oil. So only a trolley jack and a safety stand is necessary. Much more versatile than ramps which can be a danger to drive up if on your own. |

I like ramps, but my xr wont get up on them due to clearance.
i use cut down railway sleepers to run the tyres up on, sleepers are fairly cheap and solid and they give me plenty of clearance to slide the jack under the car for jacking and setting up stands. you really need jack and stands for doing some stuff. i cut steps in the leading edge of the sleepers and the car just rolls up them easy , and they dont slide out when you try and run the car on them as ramps sometimes do. i |

Another vote for a trolley jack and stands.
Anything low won't get up ramps and they're no good for wheels-off work.

2' lengths of sleepers.
I just drive on to them, then jack up and put another one in if I need more height. Never had a problem, nothing to collapse, just cant take wheels off. |

Whatever you get just dont skimp on it. Its only your life under that car. Everytime i use my jack i always have a stand under the car for just in case.

Hoist
I can't get my XR6 on ramps and I'm too scared to try and jack it up anywhere with a trolley jack. Reminds me I need to do an oil change soon .. |

I had the opportunity a while ago to get a hoist, wimped out because it would have to live out in the driveway in the weather. Very envious of your hoist Javelin. |

A pit would be cool. No matter how robust or safe a ramp, stands or even a hoist is I always cringe when getting under my car. My dad fell in a pit when he was a cop investigating a break in at a mechanics at night. 45yrs on still has a sore back so I guess there are risks there too...

I have both ramps and stands, and use what is best for the job at hand.

For low cars I usually put down some timbers on the ground. They get me the height to clear the bumpers onto the stands. Last edited by irish2; 17-03-2015 at 04:41 PM. |

My grandfathers neighbour had a pit, complete with shower, spa and wine celler, old champ passed away a few years back, his kids sold the house, first thing the new owners did was fill it in, backed a cement truck up the lane way filled it to the top..

I've been using Supercheap jacks for years without issue and like mentioned it's only used to jack the car up before stands are placed underneath to take the load.

For those that say their car will not go up ramps due to height, of lack of it.
I used to use a couple of planks sitting on the lower rungs of each ramp and drive up that, this alters the angle so it's not quite so severe and works fine.
