Default Toyota Australia unveils track-inspired 86 Blackline

Toyota Australia unveils track-inspired 86 Blackline

New-look model brings racy style to affordable sportscar family.

Toyota has unveiled a motorsport-inspired special edition version of its popular 86 sports car.

Based on the Toyota 86 GTS, the new Toyota 86 Blackline brings new looks to the model – but not more performance.

The most noticeable change is a body kit sourced through Toyota's TRD tuning arm, bringing a new three-piece rear spoiler, front spoiler and lower skirts to the party.

Toyota's regular 17-inch wheels are now finished in gloss black, and there are red accents on its seats, steering wheel, shift knob, handbrake and doors.

Power remains capped at 147kW and 205Nm from an unchanged 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine. Likewise, the brakes, tyres and suspension are carried over from the GTS, making this a cosmetic rather than a performance-based upgrade.

While that may disappoint enthusiasts, it does help keep costs down to $37,990 for manual models and $40,490 for the automatic – $2000 more than the regular GTS and $8000 more than the entry-level GT.

That gives owners room to source their own wheel, brake and suspension upgrades – something hundreds of customers have already done with existing models.

Having found more than 15,000 homes locally since the car was introduced in 2012, the 86 is undoubtedly one of the most popular sports machines on sale.

Toyota has restricted production of the Blackline to 250 manual models and 200 with automatic transmissions.

Toyota 86 Blackline pricing and specifications

Price: From $37,990 plus on-road costs

Engine: 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol

Power: 147kW at 7000rpm

Torque: 205Nm at 4000rpm

Transmission: Six-speed manual or automatic, rear-wheel-drive

Fuel use: 7.8L/100km (manual)

Yawn. Camry RZ, 'bring out the bad in granddad' over again. Toyota can do so much better than this...

"track inspired" model is like "Brembo type" brakes or "Simmons design" wheels.
All it has is body kit, paint and multi-coloured interior.

No brake upgrade, no motor improvements, same stock suspension and even same wheels and tyres (painted black).

But I'm sure they will be snapped up quickly enough.......

When Toyota stops being white goods manufacturers, they used to have some soul in the 1980s/1990s with some wicked cars, now they are beige cardigan brigade.

So never.

Will be a big seller but such a shame that has no performance upgrades at all

Like a P Plater putting performance badges on a stock car

The whole car is being reworked in the near future and a bigger motor is going in, not sure if it's n/a or turbo. But from what Toyota have said its almost an all new car.

Agree it seems very misguided. Surely they could at least put a 2.5 boxer engine in there instead of the 2.0 if they don't want the complication of a blower. So long as gearbox and diff can take it that should get it down into the low 6 second range for 0 - 100 which would be fairly respectable for this type of car. Then add some slightly larger brakes from a faster Subie and they'd be in business. I'd considered getting a demo model myself (not financial enough yet to be buying new) but in the end the G6E Ecoboost won out since it would run away from the '86 in a straight line and just seems like a fairly decent car without any real compromises given its design brief, and was cheaper by far. A sports car that gets smoked by a family sedan seems a bit silly, even if it can go around corners faster.

The human brain remembers negative more than positive.

But yeah, that model looks filth. I thought they would up the performance and not just throw on some stuff they found on ebay.

I just want the standard GTS in Pegasus White.

Driven a couple and didn't want to hand them back. Doesn't have to have huge horsepower to be a fun car.

They are indeed.
I took one for 24 hours down the NSW coast via Nasho, overnight at Ulladulla, visiting all the places I went on holiday as a kid.
Then back to Sydney via Kangaroo Valley and Macquarie Pass.

If only we had tracks like they do in Finland, I'd have one as a dedicated track toy in an instant!

147kw...so...more than the last of the "legendary" 351 V8's in the XE that everyone still gets so hot under the collar about and looks back on nostalgicly as a staggering powerhouse god of an engine...?

Anyway this thing looks hideous. The red highlights in the interior look like a cheap and nasty afterthought.
Weaving in and out of traffic? Normally I just see them crawling a long like most Camry's and Corollas.

I like the feeling of power and being pushed back into the seat when I apply pressure to the accelerator pedal.

I’ve no doubt if you’re on a real tight twisty track this thing would be fun but on most suburban roads and streets it would be left wanting.

For those reasons I’d never buy one.

Torque of the 351 is more than double this limp wristed hairdressers car. And that's the major downfall of the 86 motor, it has f all torque.

Wonder what the xe weighs compared to the gts... Probably not more than a couple hundred kilos heavier.
Modern cars are fat.

There has been a few V8's in them, Innovate may have done one, I remember seeing one with ITB's...nice.

A good car ruined by a really lame pack.

I still think they are a good car, gives you a $15k saving over the EB Mustang so thats alot of mod money...without people bagging you for getting a 4cyl Mustang.

So this must be a hard one for some, becaue many here would say buy a FiST over the GT86.

Do you do turbo FWD or "gutless" RWD?

Thats a damn hard choice, but I would be RWD all day long, you can add power to anything, changing the driveline is a PIA
