Was at the local car wash recently and a older guy came in with a new Merc 230D I think it was SUV style, he was telling me one of the safety features was if you open any door whilst car is moving , it Slams into Park automatically !! in the owners manual it says this could void warranty on the transmission....... I would think so as well all in the name of safety thou!
he is going to ask at the first service if it can be disabled. |

From memory he opened his door , to lean out to pick up the newspaper on his front lawn... and it went into park and slid on the grass...

I'm assuming its to stop those stupid people who get out of the car whilst still in drive and it rolls away from them.
In the case of him trying to grab a newspaper while moving, well he sounds like a moron to me. |

Never heard that one...and if it does exist you'll probably find it only operates at low speeds like the very situation you described. I've been in a car...can't remember which brand or what make...that would lock the doors once you got over about 10kph.

From Mercedes manual:
Engaging park position P automatically Park position P is automatically engaged if: - you switch off the engine using the SmartKey and remove the SmartKey, or if you switch off the engine using the Start/Stop button and open one of the front doors. - the HOLD function (Y page 179) or DISTRONIC PLUS (Y page 169) brakes your vehicle until it is stationary and at least one of the following conditions is fulfilled: - there is a system malfunction. - there is a severe uphill or downhill slope. The electric parking brake is then also applied. |

I believe this only happens at speeds below 4MPH, walking speed. Obviously, it ain't gonna happen if you're doing 110km/h LOL.

As Kypez says - my new FG locks the doors at 12km/hr and I wish it wouldn't!!! Having stepped up from an EF, I'm not used to it locking itself. Whenever I stop to pick someone up, I leave them on the footpath locked out - not good when it's the missus and it's raining
I think you can disable it through the menus but by leaving it this way, I can blame the car!

Owners manual for new Mercedes has 416 pages in it. I read it right though and it mad my head hurt.
And that don't cover everything. Some things are more accurately explained on the on board computer (command system). I've had the car 3 months now it dose strange things on it own. Must admit its never boring but can be distracting at times. |
