Ferrari wins engine of the year

Performance powerplants dominate annual engineering awards.

Ferrari has cleaned up at the International Engine of the Year Awards overnight, claiming three category wins with its all-new 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8.

The 492kW engine powers the new 488 GTB and 488 Spider and won over a jury of 63 international motoring journalists with its combination of performance and efficiency.

Ferrari's turbo V8 not only won the overall Engine of the Year category is also won best New Engine, Performance Engine and best engine between 3.0- and 4.0-litres.

"It's a giant leap forward for turbocharged engines in terms of efficiency, performance and flexibility," said Graham Johnson, co-chairman of the International Engine of the Year Awards. "It truly is the best engine in production today and will forever be remembered as one of the all-time greats."

It is the first engine in more than a decade to claim the top prize to feature more than six-cylinders. For the past eight years the award has been won by a succession of four-cylinder motors.

But it wasn't just the V8 that won Ferrari a gong, the Italian company also claimed the Above 4.0-litre category with its 6.3-litre V12 from the F12 TdF; the only non-turbocharged engine to win a prize.

It was the year of performance engines with six of the eight categories won by engines that power sports cars, including the 1.4 to 1.8-litre category that was claimed by the 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol hybrid powertrain from the BMW i8.

Porsche's new 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat-six for its updated 911 took out the 2.5 to 3.0-litre class, Audi's 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo from the RS3 and RSQ3 took out the 2.0 to 2.5-litre award and the Mercedes-AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo from its '45' range of models took out the 1.8 to 2.0-litre prize.

At the other end of the spectrum the Below 1.0-litre category was taken out by Ford's 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine from the Fiesta and Peugeot-Citroen's 1.2-litre three-pot won the 1.0-1.4-litre category.

International Engine of the Year winners

Below 1.0-litre: Ford 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol

1.0 to 1.4-litres: Peugeot-Citroen 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol

1.4 to 1.8-litres: BMW 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol hybrid

1.8 to 2.0-litres: Mercedes-AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol

2.0 to 2.5-litres: Audi 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo petrol

2.5 to 3.0-litres: Porsche 3.0-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo petrol

3.0 to 4.0-litres: Ferrari 3.9-litre eight-cylinder twin-turbo petrol

Above 4.0-litres: Ferrari 6.3-litre V12 petrol

That 3.9 would be a nice swap into an EA, you could keep the 3.9 badges.

2 Three-Cylinder engines in that list. What has the automotive world come to . Always had contempt for 3 cylinder cars, they represent Daihatsu vehicles. 4 cylinders is bad enough, maybe soon we will see DI, turbo, hybrid 2 strokes in cars.

And Ford has won a total of 5 awards.

The best engine under 1 litre for the last 5 years in a row.

If you check out the official website in the first post and look under ‘Rules & Scoring’ and ‘Judges’ you’ll get an insight into it.

Subjective opinions and technical knowledge are terms used in their description utilising the expertise/experience of a wide range of Journalists.

Yeah That's Right! If Ford increased the capacity of the Miami/Coyote engine to 6 or even 6.2 litres, say approximately 25% increase in capacity, it would be absolutely way ahead in Power and Torque of other engines since it's the most technologically advanced!

Talk at least 25% increase in power and torque over the retuned for Australia naturally aspirated current mustang engine, meaning at least 380 kws and 663 Nms of Thumping Ford Torque!

And then imagine if you added Direct Injection and a flat plane crank to it yet again. Now that .... Would be an engine!

These awards are handed out by journalists , they awarded VW Twin Charger six times and even Mazda Renesis was a winner too. Paper specs and real service life performance, efficiency and reliability are different things.

The xr6 turbo 4.0 litre should win best engine in the world under $50000. nothing would come close to its power and torque for the dollars and flexibilty of power delivery.

Isn't that the point of the award to highlight the fact that out of an engine < 1 litre it can be used to power a car and run quite efficiently? It awards the engineering effort. Times have changed and manufacturers are able to extract more out of their engines than ever before.

You know what, I may have to withdraw my comment. I had to google some performance specs of a car using the mighty Ford 1L.

2014 Ford Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost
0-100km/h (actually 60mph): 8.3 sec
0-400m: 16.7 sec

1998 AU Ford Falcon Forte 4.0 Sedan, 4spd Auto
0-100km/h: 8.6 sec
0-400m: 16.5 sec

Albeit with some mods, another application of the engine.

Its a pity there is not a category for long life/durability and ease of maintenance , after all , being a great engine and being well engineered is not just about how little fuel you can use ,or how much power, or how green it is.

it is also about how many maccas burgers you have too
A. pay for ... and ...
B. work and poo out of your backside to pay for expensive repairs on vehicle x`s engine replacement of parts , time taken , reliability , etc ,etc .
If i look back on my ... (yes here we go, another au comment ) .... dear old au inline 6 at 15 years old and heading for 250,000 k`s with same head gasket , same timing chain , totally unopened except for a couple of oil seals in its recent life , and the bloody thing still goes like a pearler , same fuel system ....same everything except for wearing maintenance items (water pump / idlers, plugs, etc) , how green , how well made and how cool is that ?????
I give you the falcon 6 !!!
(written and authorised and spoken by the au lovers ).

Ahhh I see, my bad.
Still, a "journalist" using one source? A US based one at that...tsk tsk.
Our cars are not always built from the same factories and to the same spec as US cars.
