Default Unregistered Vehicle Permit

I am looking at moving a car using an unregistered vehicles permit, it's a 550km trip I will be doing, the car is roadworthy and in perfect working order.

My issue is getting insurance for the trip.

I have tried NRMA and Shannons who don't want to know about it.

Got to love Shannons only been a customer of theirs for 25 plus years with zero claims.

Anyone have had any luck doing this??

I’m sure Shannon’s covered me moving a car to Tasmania a couple of years ago. They took VIN, engine number and rego was TBA.

Why don’t you sign up for a monthly policy and cancel it after a couple of weeks?

I remembered what I did, Shannons covered it under the old (expired/cancelled) number, just to fill the hole in their form. When it was re-plated in Tassie, I simply called to update the keeper's address and plates.

because the car would be unregistered making the policy void in the event of a claim. A reasonable person would disclose that fact upon renewal

Spoke to Shannons extensively today they were not interested, their exact words were, QUOTE : 'no money in it for us and too much risk'

I have had cars and bikes insured with Shannons for over 25 years, never had a claim, have had no accidents at all of any sort for about 20 years, never had any at fault accident, no tickets of any kind for about 14 years.

Cars I have had with Shannons include: XB GT sedan, FPV GT 40th anniversary, XB GS Coupe, EL XR8, Harley Davidson Fat Boy, H3 Hummer, and probably others I can't think of at the moment.

Comprehensive accident insurance, I have never driven an uninsured car since getting my license over 30 years ago.

Aha, we replied at the same time

I've had UVP's many times and never bothered with Comp Insurance for the trip
Not sure who could help you if Shannons etc have declined you

Because they charge you cancellation fees and a bunch of other fees that would make it not viable.

Then at the end of the day I have no idea if they would even pay out if something happens.

I mean the Roads and Traffic Authority are happy to issue me with a green slip and temporary registration for the trip, but insurance companies won't cover the trip.

Shannons has done their dash with me, they will never see me as a customer again.

I don't really feel comfortable driving a 70K car uninsured for 600km, chances are nothing will happen, but with my luck some idiot will run into it with an unregistered car and no income.

Or even worse I will loose my house with damage caused in an accident.

I did not even want full cover for the full amount, I said anything they will insure it for will be fine.

It’s odd, I wasn’t going to drive uninsured for similar reasons of concern - yet in June 2017 the person I spoke to at Shannon’s had no misgivings. Could well be they’ve reviewed their risks since then.

Will be making more phone calls tomorrow, any insurance company that talks sense will be getting my business from now on.

Shannons has kicked me one too many times now, the amounts of money I have paid them over the decades and they literally do nothing for you.

Quite possible, or just gotten more greedy.

Sadly Shannons has become the same as the other compainies. My daily was damaged when some unit ran up the rear while texting or playing some game on her phone, they tried to get me to take it to the nearest Capitol SMART sausage factory quick fix repair centre. They are owned by Suncorp these days I believe, who also use the same repairers.
I’m sorry to hear of your situation, but I’d be inclined to get it registered in NSW prior to the drive so you can get comprehensive insurance or just have it transported. If it’s on the Gold Coast it’s not far to transport it to the border for rego. I hope you sort it out.

Definitely something I have been considering, but I don't really want it registered yet, but it might be something I have to do.

Save yourself time and pay an insurance broker. They will let you know what is possible and perhaps come up with a range of solutions. Or let you know you are wasting your time trying.

i have shannons laid up cover and asked them about a UVP, they told me i just need to call up and swap over to comprehensive insurance before the trip and swap back after the trip.

or even laid up will cover it for being stolen or damaged just not under its own power

are you after fully comprehensive or just the minimum required?

I went through this with a customer a few weeks back, and with a permit originating in qld, i'm pretty sure the insurance was made available when applying online

If its worth $70K then pay to get it transported. how much $$ are we talking?
Plus when you subtract the cost of the insurance policy (that you can't get)
