Australia's nearly 30 year economic run without a recession is coming to an end soon.

https://www.goauto.com.au/news/vfact...-04/79867.html

The market was down 10.1% but Ford was down much more at 17.5%.

They will fudge the figures to ensure this will not happen.

This is something that doesn't get much comment. Ford, Holden and Toyota's company fleet turn over as well a dealer incentives helped soak up excess plant volume and therefore inflated sales numbers.

Lots of people have lost interest in the market. Even if you didn’t buy a local car, local cars gave the market some magic.

Now it’s just a sea of generic front-wheel-drives runabouts or diesel POS utes

Actually think electric vehicle onslaught is just what we all need to get interested again

Still a large number of new vehicles coming out all over the globe (from grocery getters to hyper cars).

They may not interest you, but you don't speak for everyone.

Wasn't expecting to see a 10% dive in sales. That's a huge amount in one month. Economy is really slowing.

I reckon tighter lending is probably making a bit of a dint too.

How long till the government drops the nothing to see here rhetoric and starts trying to do something to boost the economy? Or are they too stuck on getting a surplus to show how great an economic manager they are?

Govt thought it could tax cut its way to wealth but really
so many people now feel the financial branch cracking
beneath them, it’s hard when confidence is evaporating

Gotta give people hope that better times are coming in
spite of the US picking a fight with our Asian customers.

The key is what sort of stimulus is really needed instead
of just a cash giveaway........

Makes me wonder if Endura is just dragging sales from Escape and Everest
New Escape should do a lot to change perception but Ford still likes to stick
with no stripper base models and just get to mid level model sales.

What they do need is something to replace Mondeo that’s better aligned with
buyer direction, not just another car and not just a Forrester rip off either,
something sleeker that looks cool and that people want to buy....

I've always had a soft spot for the Mazda brand. But every twenty years they seem to **** it up big time. In the 1970s their use of the rotary engine burnt them when the oil price significantly increased. In the 1990s their Eunos division bled them dry when the Japanese economic bubble popped. Now in the 2010s their push upmarket appears to be poorly timed as the global economy begins to unravel.

EcoSport - 29 loses money on every sale
Endura - 189 luck to break even, even at that ridiculous sales price
Escape - 213 loses money on every sale
Everest - 423 decent profit
Falcon - 0
Fiesta - 0
Focus - 333 loses money
Mondeo - 38 loses money
Mustang - 229 makes money
Ranger 4x2 - 297 makes a little money
Ranger 4x4 - 2884 makes **** loads of money
Territory - 0
Transit Bus - 0
Transit Custom - 207 makes a fair profit
Transit Heavy - 74
so from those numbers, I'd suggest Kay Hart is delighted. The products that are selling are the profitable ones. Now that we have even higher margin series like the Wildrak X on the market I'd say things are actually looking up!

One thing, new Focus Trend starts at $29,532 DA and goes up from there....
Not sure what Astra starting price is but pretty confident it's nowhere near that..( Answer $21,490..)

Cheapest Mondeo you can get is $37,000 DA.....
that's gotta be $7K-$10K dearer than a Camry / Similar price to ZB Commodore?

Now defunct Equinox base was $27,990 DA but mid model is $32K same as Escape Ambiente...

Basically this. The magic of the locals (apart from being built locally and all the income & tax recirculation & skills maintenance & career paths) was that you got the similar specs as much more expensive Euro cars (RWD & proper AWD, handling, comfort, performance models) at about 1/3 to 1/2 the price. And cheap, plentiful parts usually with simple drivetrains that last a very long time. The value equation was fantastic. What remains in this price range is pretty meh.

While Falcon was in a category that was phasing into nothing (which now cascades through midsize and compact passenger cars) - the real loss was the Territory, the X5 at Falcon bucks.

Currently I'm entertaining that the whole electric boom coming might be a massive case of capital misallocation; and in that case the carnage will be large indeed. % of market for these is not taking off in Oz, lithium indexes are still being smashed, and %s are lessening once Govco subsidies are removed (and the Oz industry was lambasted for it's subsidies, how about electric/green then?)

That said, an affordable electric runabout means it's possible to not pay fuel for a year, so that 2K to 5K is better in my pocket. Funny to go from car enthusiasm to this. So from a personal viewpoint that's the area of interest and maybe better to pay for battery storage for the solar, as it comes down in price. While waiting for the 20K electric runabout.

The fuel saved can then power the classic E series/AU. Which is where my car focus is at the moment tbh.

Ford and GM will neatly tell us that Falcon and Commodore were dying anyway
and mostly that is true but, consider that the very existence on both local cars
was predicated on the belief that no other vehicles existed elsewhere in either
operation that could cover that segment. The very reason for their existence
was also used to bring them undone...

Neither of them was permitted to change or evolve into more appropriate vehicles
because that would be stepping outside the tight guidelines set down for their existence.

But wouldn't have been interesting if VF Commodore sporned a medium and large SUV
instead of chasing after Caprice sales..... Imagine if Ford Explored a crossover Falcon
and made the Territory slightly longer as a more comfortable three row SUV..

LOL, That's why it's called a dutch auction.

I am dubious when someone says this or that car makes absolutely no money,
if that were truly the case, GM or Ford would simply stop bringing those products here.
They still make money, it's just that the profit taking happened when those ships left home port.

Holden needs to heavily discount to keep sales going and stay in business, Ford doesn't.
Maybe asking why that's the case is more relevant than just counting sales.....

I am glad though to see Holden dropping some base models and offering mid trim level vehicles
at affordable pricing, that's probably a better value proposition than chasing base model sales.

The reason Ford sales numbers are low goes to the prices being asked,
Focus starts at $29,500 Drive away, nearly $8,000 more than base Astra.
Cheapest Mondeo is $37K DA - you can get a Commodore for that, Camry $7K less.

Base Ambiente Escape stats north of $32K, Holden just dropped base Equinox ($27,990 DA)
and now selling mid level trim for same price as Escape base model, you do the math...

It just looks like Ford wants at least $30K a vehicle, preferably $50K or $60K a sale,
that's why numbers look so dreadful, that and Ecosport just looks so....ugh...

Ford has the right idea with premium pricing, they just need to apply it to more premium vehicles
like maybe starting that on the the next trim level up the totem pole (LOL)

Their prices are way,way to high.It is all about profit with them. They are NOT competitively priced.

Combined with a self induced poor brand image, recipe for declining sales in all but the most sought after segments as is evident.

I don't know much about Trax, but I doubt it has many features over the ecosport. but it sells 495

what it does have is a funky appeal for that market, the ecosport is an ugly mistake, and should be canned immediately

What Trax does have is advertising, i cannot understand why people would buy that god awful vehicle for other than the 'im so cool im driving a Trax' ads. 495? God the average IQ of Australians must have dropped or they are giving them away in Cornflakes sorry organic muesli packets.
