Planning on importing parts to the value of $3000 from the UK.
If one has an ABN number for a non motor vehicle related business, can that be applied to car parts to avoiding paying the GST. |

Just because you have an ABN, does not change your GST status. You have to be also registered for GST, and have the ability to claim the GST as an Input Tax Credit.

GST is payable on all goods imported no matter the value, or your ABN or non ABN status there is no getting out of it.
It used to be items under $1000 there was no GST, now it does not matter if the item is $1, you pay the .10c. Like others have stated, pay the GST and claim if its related to your business. Just remember even though they are car parts, you may have to also pay import duty. https://intas.com.au/importing-busin...customs%20duty. Last edited by prktkljokr; 13-10-2020 at 09:04 PM. |

And in addition to the cost of the parts from the UK, there will be 5% duty, and if shipped by an Importer (DHL etc), an $80 Customs charge, and $22 disbursements.
I ship once or twice a month from the UK, and shipment times vary from 10 to 30 days. As there are hardly any direct flights from the UK to Oz at the moment, be prepared for your shipment to spend some time in Dubai, or Dohar and then off to Narita in Japan for a couple of days. That’s a common route for DHL at the moment, along with a couple of days in Leipzig in Germany. Also, there is no rhyme or reason regarding the payment of GST and duty. Sometimes its charged, and sometimes not - and does not seem dependant on the value of the goods - not withstanding that in every case, a commercial invoice is attached to the goods, and supplied to the shipper. |

As said you can be charged GST on any goods under $1k now. Over $1k there is usually extra customs and duties as per above.
If a company is doing a lot of business with australian residents the gov usually puts the pressure on for them to register for GST and charge it in their invoice. It happened with rock auto, they got pressure put on them and stopped selling to australians until they registered for GST. Some of the smaller businesses aren't registered and you normally get away with not paying GST, but that was 9 months ago, maybe customs are pulling them up now. Avoid DHL and try for UK post, USPS or UPS for smaller items and there's never been any extra charges for me from certain smaller non GST registered businesses (I usually buy about $400 or so worth of BMW parts per year from overseas from pelican or fcp euro and have never been charged GST because they aren't GST registered and don't do much business in Australia). E: pretty sure FCP don't have invoices or declarations on the box either, just con/picking slip and sent via UPS. But OP is going to be slugged a lot more than GST, there's going to be freight and customs on ,so factor that into your costs. |

A few points:
- Gst applicable for goods over Aud1000... for goods under aud1000 you won’t pay it at the border, only if the supplier is registered with ATO (sells more than Aus75k a year to Australia) and charges it on the invoice. - Gst is levied in more than just goods value: its 10% of customs value + freight + insurance + duty. - duty more than likely applicable. There are tariff concessions for certain items and certain parts that are for cars more than 30 years old (reproduction) - you will pay a customs/aqis processing fee of $88 on top of the Gst and duty (over aud10000 it’s $190) - If the goods are used quarantine inspection required which involves more costs - of goods come in with FedEx/dhl express customs clearance is included in freight cost. - as for the whole abn thing. Gst is still applicable it’s just with an abn you may be able to claim on BAS but of these are not for on selling then it won’t matter. GST deferral can be set up with you cpa so you won’t pay on import, again this is only of use if you are on selling the goods with the business and will still need to be accounted for on the BAS Hope this helps Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That's not how it works. Everybody pays GST. Then, if you run a business (or "enterprise", and subject to a threshold) you also charge and collect GST on your sales. A bit like income tax, GST Collected - GST Paid (on claimable expenses) = GST sent to ATO. If you buy via an eCommerce site, such as ebay, Amazon, etc, then they are obliged to collect the GST. Otherwise, your goods should be impounded as they come in and you have to pay the GST then. A lot of small things still slip through.

If you are under the aud1000 threshold and didn’t get charged Gst by the vendor (those who have to ie ebay, Amazon, etc) then you won’t pay Gst or duty. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Who is under what threshold? GST is payable on the import of ALL taxable goods. Period. end of story. Only goods it isn't paid on are those not subject to GST. The only thing that changes is the method of collection.

- Goods are part of a bulk order - Goods are Alcohol or Tobacco Yes, if you purchase off an Ecommerce site (Ebay/Amazon/etc) then they will charge GST as part of the transaction but that's a different animal. I do this for a living, every single day.. I work for one of the largest international express freight companies in the world. I have been licensed by ABF I'm not guessing or taking the ****. I could site multiple sources, legislation and precedents to back my point up, but I'll make it simple, below is a link to the ATO page on Non Taxable Importations. Item 26 to be exact: https://www.ato.gov.au/business/gst/...e_importations I was not speaking in response to OP's AUD3000 question, in his case YES GST/Duty/etc applies. I was replying in reference to another post stating ALL goods no matter WHAT the value pay GST on import.

Big_Daz is a 100% correct, read all his posts, he has it all covered. Your items would have been charged GST by the seller as they would be registered for GST with the ATO

Looking at importing a set of heads from the US (probably use summit) around 2500 aud.
Do I just wait to be contacted when the package is held by customs as they dont add extra taxes onto the order.

Yes.
Whos shipping it? If DHL expect the phonecall about them holding it hostage and wanting GST and fees. If other companies and the value isn't declared then you might get lucky. I've never bought anything over $1k so don't know your chances. But anything under $1k with ups, fedex or USPS I've just never been charged. |

If it's over $1000 and they catch it in customs you'll get charged GST 10% and Import duty about 5%. Sometimes you can get lucky and the items will slip through but not usual if being brought in by the major freight companies. They are obligated to collect the GST. If your item gets stopped by customs be prepared to go searching the Tariff list on the Gov web pages, prob section 3. I just got charged for pistons, rings and lifters + postage came to $1500us. Ended up paying another $400. Gst ,duty and $90 customs fee for paperwork that the computer does. Summit will take the GST out already.
