Default Ford America Has a Problem Selling SUV'S

"If you’re looking for a great deal on a new SUV, stop by your local dealership and ask to see a 2020 model. There will probably be a pretty good selection of Ford SUVs. That’s because last year wreaked havoc on the auto industry during the nationwide shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. Ford had a hard time moving its vehicles, and by year’s end, dealerships saw a surplus of SUVs on lots across the country...."

I don't get this article.

In today's Wall Street Journal is says

Quote:
Ford Motor Co. is scheduling more downtime at several U.S. factories, including its two major truck plants, as a global shortage of semiconductors upends vehicle manufacturing for car makers in North America.

The company said Wednesday that it would halt production for two weeks in April at its truck plant in Dearborn, Mich., and take a week of downtime on the truck side of its Kansas City, Mo., assembly plant, starting Monday. It also plans to suspend work temporarily and cancel planned overtime at several other factories in North America, attributing the work stoppages to tight chip supplies.

Like other car companies, Ford has been struggling to secure enough semiconductor chips as makers of those components have been slammed with surging demand from other industries.

Ford in February said it planned to reduce production of its F-150 pickup truck—the nation’s top-selling vehicle and the company’s biggest money maker—because of the shortage. It also said at the time that global production losses from the chip shortfall in the first and second quarters could cut $1 billion to $2.5 billion from its pretax bottom line this year.
Surely if there is a shortfall in vehicles, anything left on the lot would be snapped up?

Inventories across the us auto industry are always high. They have such a huge market to sell to so inventories need to be high. But with production stoppages due to covid, and the semi conductor shortage, i can’t see how stock levels can be too high. When us auto sales are only down a few %. And the f series, explorer etc are still selling very well. I see the us sales reports every month.

Perhaps the desire for utes has impacted SUV sales more than anticipated.

Pick ups are always insanely popular in the us though. It’s not a new thing. If anything, suv sales have been increasing at the expense of sedans.

Ford USA had better sales last month, 2020 Escape run out is now proceeding with about 9,000 left nationwide or about 50% of dealer stock.
