Question fwkW - Why??

I don't understand this. On this forum, and this is the ONLY place I've seen this, people refer to kW @ the fly as "fwkW." Why not just say (I'll use a GT as an example) my car has 290kW then "My car has 290fwkW."

fwkW is supposed to mean "front wheel kiloWatts" So what happens when we talk about FWD cars? Someone says I have 150fwkW and then everyone goes "Do you meen at the wheels or flywheel?"

Needed to get that little rant off my chest (I really believe it is stupid)... and am still curious as to why people do that.. : :

Although I would probably not have bothered to start a thread about it, I certainly agree, fwkw is just stupid. :

because if someone said "i had 260 kw", someone would ask if that was at the fly or at the wheels
now if were talkin about a BA GT, its pretty obvious that its not at the front wheels isnt it - so fwkw obviously means at the fly

if were talkin about a marsbar (mazda), and someone says its got 100kw, ....um....who cares

"fwkw" is at the fly wheel, the figure is what they get when the motor alone is being tested, with out the power being put through the gear box and diff, and as you should know you loose about 20 to 30% of power through the running gear of the car.
So a BOSS 290 will (should) produce 290 kW at the fly wheel, hence BOSS 290! But produces around 220 to 240 "rwkw"
And where the F**K do you get fwkw meaning "front wheel kilowatts" ANY power that is made AT the wheel front OR back is known as "rwkw" as majority of cars are rear wheel driven, and how are 4wd's tested and rated "F&RWKW" ?

FWD Car = front wheel kiloWatts (fwkW)

RWD Car = rear wheel kiloWatts (rwkW)

AWD Car = all wheel kiloWatts (awkW)

Oh and these days, the majority of cars seem to be FWD... every micro and small car (1-Series aside) is FWD... most medium sized cars (3-Series and C-Class aside) are FWD.......

Even alot of "soft-roaders" are FWD most of the time....

I agree, I constantly find my self confused over people saying their GT has 290fwkw. God people, tell us if that 290 is at the flywheel or the front wheels!

Better yet, all you soft-o-matic owners, can we quote 290 fpkw?

What MADNC_8 said, its pretty obvious whether the car is FWD, RWD or 4WD. fwKW would just refer to the flywheel, makes it easier to understand.

I dont think you can have a dig at individuals when that is how the cars are marketed. Ford states (and decals) 220, 260, 290 to reduce tolerances for compliance with quality assurance.. THe general public has no choice to refer to output as FWKW... Weather it is just the abbreviation of FW for fly wheel you are unhappy with is pointless. As everyone else said, most enthusiasts should know if your talking fly or front wheels..

Dont forget the trend in having your car on a chassis dyno has only become popular in the last few years. RWKW didn't exist to the everyday Joe.. A good engine builder might dyno an engine dyno after a rebuild but that was it. The rest was worked using 1/4 mile ETS, mph and vehicle weight. We are in a new era where chassis dyno'ing and RW output is becoming very popular, but as I said earlier to reduce costs, variables and tolerances the manufacturers wont come into marketing as RWKW anyway

I have browsed a few rice forums in my time and they seem to use the term "wkw", as in "wheel KW", when referring to front wheel kw. I assumed that fwkw what pretty much accepted as flywheel kw.

Hahaha now I have these mental pictures of bum draggers on dynos... reversed in??? Yes, yes, I know they do it... but its funny anyway...

To me fwkw as always been at the fly, and rwkw is at the rears. That is that. Since it is a direct comparison between engine power and rear wheel power it makes sense. You cant compare between front drive and rear drive power on one car.... so to talk about fwkw and rwkw re ONE car makes perfect sense to me....

Agreed this is a silly thread. But I just posted in it, so there ya go... LOL

Come on, be nice, its hardly an important issue, but its a fair question no matter how trivial. _

Bahahahahaha.... I think its because no-one here really gives a f**k about FWD's, especially ones that advertise how many KW they pull (or is that 'drag') at the wheels!

P.s. Sorry for ignoring this warning (even though its true).... I just had to say it!

EXATLY... this thread should be on mazda forums or some shite. This is the first time i've seen anyone on here talk about front wheel kw anyway. :lookedat:

now now people play nicely :hihi:

but in my opinion it is fine to refer to fly wheel kilowatts as fwkw on this site, and obviously rear wheel kilowatts is rwkw...i mean its not that difficult to work out whats what, and if someone is talking about their GT and says fwkw: its pretty damned obvious that its not a front wheel reading!!

This site is worth a look http://www.pumaracing.co.uk/power3.htm
And 4wd's are measured in Bhp & ft/lbs torque not "fwkw" or "rwkw"

F$%K WIT KILOWATTS

yeh thats more like it.

ok.. so steffo got his rant off his chest... do you have to make him change his opinion?

on this site i dont se the need to standardise on what FW means in the FWKW thing, coz when you say a falc' has xxx fwkw.. we know what they're talking about.. if someone says focus fwkw, then yeh you gotta ask whether they is talkin about fly wheel or front wheel.. but generally you get the idea when they happen to mention they had the car dynoed..

i just hope this thread teaches people to be clear about it in future rather then thinking they're the ones who decide what FW means.. and no that isnt a dig at anyone specific.. just... put up with it!

i just say xxxkw at the wheels

cause normally when i speak about it if i say "250kw" i mean at the fly so when i mean rwkw i say "250kw at the wheels"

simple enough dont be lazy wright what you mean

I don't see how someone saying a GT has 290fwkw could mean kw at the front wheels?

At what point did this actually become an issue? Does it really matter? Who actually even cares?

I wont be losing any sleep over this tonight.
