Default Removing gear knob ?

Anyone know if my manual GT type gear knob screws on or is it actually welded : .

Its reallly tight I think ?

They are really tight, sometimes they require multgrips to remove them, but this will obviously damage it.

So they are screwed on, I had it in a vice risking damage and still no movement. Like its glued on ??

Probably has locktite on it . I tell ya some people like using that stuff.

I was setting up 10 brand new HP 8 foot server racks and the buggers at the factory put locktite on the feet.

Depending on what you need to do, you can lift the console and undo the bolts that hold the shifter on. This had to be done with mine by a dealer when they replaced the shifter boot.

I want to re-do my facia panels and surrounds. I suppose I can take the boot off he panel.... I did not look at that, is the boot screwed on underneath the facia panel ?

APC Could not get the knob off when they did my rip shift either, bloody tight.

What is G&D stuff ??

You MKI owners are lucky my gear knob is loose as have to put thread tape on just to keep it in the right position.

G&D is Guts & Determination...

The boot is part of the square panel... comes off by lifting gently from the front, it has 4 plastic tags (make sure drink holder flap is open on BA's) This is After unscrewing gear knob.

There is also a gadget a bit like a small version of an oil filter removal tool with a soft liner...Maybe Repco or super-ripoff?

Yeah!! Just get a drill and drill a hole through the top of the knob, then put a phillips headed screw driver through the hole then vualla!! off with the knob you knob! :gren:

There is no need to remove the knob Charlie. Unclip the panel as you suggested, and you can access the shifter bolts or you could access the underside of the panel and detach the shifter boot from it, leaving shifter/knob and boot attached to the car.

Thats what I will have to do I think. Until I want to change the boot, but then I may order a new Knob.

Never had one this tight.... And I want to loosen it ? :

I reckon they LockTite them on, i've had a few boots on mine now, when they try to undo the knob, they end up unsticking the leather on it, mine was freely rotating and was only a matter of time before it came off, so be aware of that if you try to remove it by hand.

lift up the panel, unbolt the shifter from the box, put it in a vice, wrap rags around the knob and use multi grips. it works fine, thats what i had to do to mine, nearly snapped the rod trying to do it in the car.

Just to give this thread a bump I had the joy of getting the damn knob off today.
So here I am twisting the damn thing and its not moving.
Jumped on the forums found this thread and went and stole the hair dryer from the bathroom. My thinking was that heat might make it easier to come off. So im heating the base of the knob and its still not coming off while at the same time burning my hands.
Im getting pretty angry now so I go off to the shed and grab the pliers. Go back to the car and grip it and turn. Holy crap it moved kept going and I finally removed it. While the knob was off I noticed something. It screws in at the very top and I was heating it down the bottom. :

also ive got these little rubber mat things which you can buy at the supermarket (iguess) they are for getting jars open but are great for shifters. they dont slip at all.

no idea what they are called though.
