Default V8 Adventura Dropped aswell as VZ Trayback.

Struggling Adventra V8 gets the axe

All washed up: Holden's Adventra V8 has failed to perform.

Manufacturing complexity has been blamed for the end of the Adventra V8 variant

By NEIL McDONALD 30 December 2005

HOLDEN has decided to discontinue its V8 variants of its Adventra all-wheel drive and concentrate on Adventra V6s only.

The decision was made partly because the V8 model has been a slow seller in the competitive sports utility vehicle segment and also “the need to reduce manufacturing complexity at the Elizabeth, South Australia operations” according to spokesman, David Ellis.

The company has also decided to discontinue Holden One Tonner variants in preparation for the all-new VE Commodore in the second half of 2006.

Holden has sold about 3000 Adventras this year, compared to more than 22,000 Ford Territorys and the car has struggle despite the addition of a V6 in February.

Holden launched the Adventra as a V8 only model in 2003 with the V6 arriving in February 2005.

The V8 initially struggled because of its high $50,000-plus price, forcing the company to slice $4000 off the car’s price.

In 2004 just 2500 Adventras were sold, well short of Holden's 4800 target.

Another issue overshadowing the Adventra's future is the arrival of the GM-Daewoo sourced Captiva sports utility vehicle, based on the S3X concept car.

Holden is yet to release full details on the Captiva but it is likely to be available in five, or seven-seater configurations as well as front or all-wheel drive.

There are several powertrain options too – a 2.4-litre four-cylinder, a Holden built 3.2-litre Alloytec V6 as well as two Korean-built 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines.

The state-of the-art Euro-4 compliant common-rail diesels will be available in fixed geometry turbo (FGT) form, which develops 88kW at 4000 rpm and 280Nm at 2000rpm, as well as a higher performing variable geometry turbo (VGT), which develops 110kW at 4000rpm and 310Nm at 2000rpm.

Meanwhile, from January 1, Holden's domestic and imported petrol vehicle range will all comply with strict Euro3 (ADR 79/01) regulations.

Federal Government legislation requires all 2006 petrol engine cars and light commercial vehicles to meet Euro3 requirements – including new standards for exhaust emissions and restrictions on fuel evaporation.

Current exhaust emission limits (ADR 79/00 or Euro 2) restrict hydrocarbon and oxides of nitrogen emissions to 0.5 grams per kilometre and carbon monoxide to 2.2gm/km.

Euro3 (ADR 79/01) requirements restrict hydrocarbon emissions to 0.2gm/km, oxides of nitrogen to 0.15gm/km and carbon monoxide to 2.3gm/km.

Holden also announced model changes to its model year 2006 line-up of locally produced vehicles in preparation for an all-new Commodore in the second half of the year.

The high-tech 3.6-litre Alloytec engine introduced in the VZ Commodore series in 2004 required minor changes to the engine, exhaust system and calibration to meet Euro 3 requirements.

These changes included new fuel injectors and a new exhaust catalyst.

As reported by GoAuto in November, the new 6.0-litre L76 alloy engine, a member of GM’s fourth-generation small block V8 family, joins the lineup for 2006.

The engine develops 260kW at 5600 rpm and 510Nm at 4400 rpm when tested with 98RON premium unleaded petrol.

I was wondering how long they were going to suffer with that lifted Commodore wagon thingy. I don't know why they don't get rid of it altogether?

They are only dropping the V8 version because it is not worth spending the money to calibrate the new 6L V8 for the awd drivetrain. Mind you they could have boosted production prior to 1st Jan when the Euro 3 emission regs come in, and they would have plenty of stock to sell for a while - I bet they still will have anyway lol

Yes the Adventura wont move on to the VE guise, I doubt they will continue to build that many V6's even, perhaps they will just have enough stock floating around to accomodate 200 sales a month and it will be over.

If the Territory had not have been realeased you could be assured that the Adventura would have done alot better then it has. Most people who have one seem happy enough with them as it beats your conventional style wagon, but at the same time it was overpriced for the market, especially the V8.

I hope anyone who bought one plans on keeping it for atleast 5 years!

How can they do a VE based Adventra when there is no VE wagon! Sure a VE wagon is a certainty but not for some time. From what I have been told Holden will source the Adventra replacement from Daewoo.

Going by memory the Adventra cost $200m to develop, amortise that across a pathetic 6500 sales and you have over $3000 in development cost per vehicle. That can't be good...

Yes but alot of that expense has been covered in the AWD crewman varients also, so at the end of the day its probarly half that amount per vehicle. :

I don't know why they don't source the "new" Commodore from Daewoo? They've sourced everything else from them?? :

Oh yeah, they have sold heeaps of those too! Crewman awd setup would cost extra to develop, starting with the wagon stuff they need to do the live axle setup including a new tailshaft (then another one for the single cab) and make sure it is all going to live with heavier loads.

Actually in 2004, 1559 Crewman AWD were sold, it has been running around 130 per month since, so this year will be similar.

I don't think anybody is. I drove an Adventra before buying my Territory, and its not bad. The V8 is old and noisy, and the 4 Speed auto was terrible (admittedly, the Territory 4 Speed isn't much better) but by and large, the Adventra could never compete with a better packaged car. The V6 Adventra may be a good car, however my $$ went to Ford, because they had the better looking, and driving car.

Long live the Territory.

Didn't they have issues with the One tonner's chassis with flex/bending behind the cab with a 1 tonne load?

From what I heard there were a couple of early production ones that did infact sag and crack. My old man saw the photos.

Funny thing is, one of the reasons why the V8 was launched before the V6 was that Holden felt it wasn't worth engineering the Adventra for the old V6 prior to the introduction of the Alloytec.

Bit of a shame I reckon, I'd much prefer to see it have it's bugs sorted re price, etc..
Nothing like a V8 something hacking through the scrub even if it's a Holden!
I can see why ford won't tip anymore effort into the RTV ute though.
But geeze they'd sell some if they had a front diff under them!!

A V8 and 6-speed as option (and a XR6T RTV model) would be ace.

Even better would be an AWD model, but perhaps in 2007...

Any news on the Crewman? Have they dropped it as well?

I think the crewman will continue, but will obviously be VZ based till late 07. Some how i think this is really going to affect Holdens utes sales by carrying over the VZ for another 18 months! Ford can really capitalise on that I believe if they push hard enough.

Once the VZ is finished i believe crewman will end, they cant justify designing a VE based one :gren:

Shows how much a manufacturer can abuse the ute market...

WB Kingswood utes continuing in well in to the 80's, years after the Commodore release
No real changes to Falcon utes from 1979-1998
Running the XF 250 ute well in to the EA years
Now the VZ ute platform running in to VE production

... and they still sell like hotcakes.

Reading and comprehension skills are not strong traits for you? We all know the V8 is gone. Now it has been announced that the V6 models will also cease production later this year. I suggest you read the GoAuto article closely. Click here to download a copy.

Yes I read in a report the other day that they are still producing the VZ Adventra, All you guys might wanna bag the Adventra out, but it is a completely different market to the Territory, one is a full on SUV, the other is simply an AWD, more of an Outback competitor, where the trritory is more of a kluger competitor.

I Test drove a VZ Adventra, and apart from looking great, it drove superbly, quiet and smooth, and mountain loads of features in the LX6, I figured though that the running costs were a bit high, but my friend that came with me was so impressed by it that he bought it instead.
