And we think we have problems! Wonder how it compares pro-rata with ours?
Road deaths kill 98,738 in China 13.01.06 6.20am Accidents on China's roads, the most dangerous in the world, killed 98,738 people last year, or about 270 a day, but officials hailed an 8 per cent decline from 2004's carnage. The number of injured fell slightly to 470,000 in almost as many accidents, the Ministry of Public Security said.

Something is going to have to thin the worlds numbers, sorry to say but we are over populating the earth and its going to fix itself soon be it disease or another earthquake or tsunami its going to come.
It doesnt surprise me seeing those numbers it all comes down to the way they drive, if anyone has been to bali or anywhere like tat then they will know what im talking about they are some crazy bastards, but an 8% drop is good all without speed cameras i would dare say HEY MR MINISTER.....

Go and see what is is like. The roads are covered with bikes, particularly in Beijing, and there is no right of way on pedestrian crossings. Speed is DEFINITELY NOT a problem as they all trundle along way under the speed limit even on open roads or freeways.
Some of the cars are crap but there are squillions of japanese and european models getting about. I even saw a LHD VZ commodore in Shanghai once. |

After a couple of minutes on the Australian Bureau of Statistics website, it turns out you're more likely to die of diabetes-related illness than something going wrong on the motorway...

I have been to China in 2003.
Speed ...the scariest car trip I have ever taken was in the taxi from Shanghai airport. In the back of a near new 1980 model VW Passat (yes they make cars we stopped buying on the 80’s) no seat belts fitted to car, in pouring rain, driver doing over 150km/h in a 100 zone, whilst talking on mobile phone and steering with knees. Just when I thought this was fastest anyone had ever traveled in China, the MagLev train went past us as if we were going backwards. (does over 400km/h). The roads have pedestrians, bicycles, scooters, motorbikes, cars, vans, trucks, buses, semi trailers, and farm vehicles all fighting for the same square cm of road. Pedestrian crossings seem to mean nothing to motorists, and they just keep going. I am a big bloke and as it was winter was wearing my Matrix type coat. I noticed everytime I went to cross the road a large number of locals would gather beside me, down stream from the traffic. Because towering above most of the population, and far wider too, the cars would actually stop for me. So they could get across the road too. The traffic lights also have a 2 digit readout that counts down the last 30 sec’s before your lights change so you can stage the lights. On the way to work we would overtake farm trailers being towed by….. rotary hoes!!! Take a look at the picture of the open distribution cabinet, 3 phase HV open in the car park, no stupid ‘contents of coffee cup may be hot‘ type signs or lawsuits in China, stupid people are simply removed from society. |

All of the Third World Countries are bad. In the wake of the Egyptian bus accident, we have been told that the annual Egyptian road toll is over 10,000. India is not much better, and all because their cars don't have the safety features that are mandatory in cars sold in Australia. Airbags aren't even in the Indian Fiesta, and ABS, don't make me laugh.
In other news, ABS saves my life tonight, as it was raining, and a car in front that didn't have break lights on stopped in front of me. I hit the breaks in the Territory, and stopped on a dime. My Horn also works. Thank Christ for Bosch.

If you're really worried about falling victim to a car accident, go to Sweden - lowest per capita road related death rates in the world. If you've ever driven there, you'll see how it's hard to have an accident. The cars people drive help too, I suspect
Quote:
Lots of VW Santanas all over China, VW is the dominant car manufacturer there, but things will change, it is inevitable that a manufacturer which had such dominance over the market will have to give up share to to other manufacturers (which has already taken place). Driving in Shanghai is madness - people take the opportunity to drive down the wrong side of the road if it's clear, ride motorbikes with babies in one hand, there's just no real system. You don't know whether to laugh or cry! |

Their road toll problems would be completely solved if they just installed "road safety" cameras everywhere. It's doing wonders for the Victorian road toll. _

maybe if they put up orange safety triangles, they would prevent secondary accidents and deaths.
