Default Accommodation in Melbourne June 2006 - Where is best?

Hi Folks,

My sister is being married in Melbourne in June 2006 and I have to come down to MC and generally be there. We will be there for four nights from 15 June 2006 to 18 or 19 June 2006.
There will be 2 adults and three kids (youngest only one year old)
I am after advice on what is some good value accommodation in (or very near Melbourne CBD)
I think self contained accommodation is the go as that way we can keep the kids happy at irregular times.

The best western has self contained appartments @ $ 100 per night or so. Does anyone know if they are alright?

What other suggestions can you offer?, I know there are many "mexicans" on this forum and was hoping someone had some local knowledge that I cant find on the net. - Or even better work in the industry and has an inside line on a good deal.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

try wotif.com or lastminute.com to give you ideas on places that will give you cheaper rates if you don't book too far in advance.

Can't help on any actual places though. My idea of camping is a hotel that doesn't provide a hairdryer, so I can't help beyond the Park Hyatt, Crown or The Grand. Sorry.

I'd suggest the Novotel in St.Kilda.

When I travel on my own dollar, for a few days I stay a Formula 1. But for the numbers of people you are talking about, a self contained apartment would be great. However Most will charge extra for extra beddings that you are likely to require.

When I stay on the companies dollar, it is just like Yummy Mummy's description.

I have been looking at these sites. Normally I go away so infrequently that I stay in a nice place. At the moment I have some very naughty tenants (read people I would like to find tresspassing while I hold a 12 gauge) who have trashed a house and left me out of pocket about $5000, and I am anxious about re letting the property as they have done serious damage. I know I will not get the same return due to the state of the property so I am trying to minimise future expenditure as I try to deal with the unknown. This is why I am trying to get good value for money accommodation.

I wouldn't pay for myself but if it is a business trip then that's another story. I know a number of Europeans who insist on staying at that hotel when they are in Melbourne.

Well I know its probably further than you would like, out at Airport West, but the deluxe cabins at the Airport Caravan Village (I think it is called) are really good. There is a pool there for the kids, plenty of room to run around and they are self contained. Not too expensive either, around $100 a night or so (I think)....

Bit too far from the city though, Im sure. Its a good 40 min drive from there around the Western Ring Road, from memory.

The closer you get the more expensive it will be.

I had a look at the link and I think I will give them a call and lean on them for a better deal.

If you want to spoil yourself a bit and really experience the inner city executive apartment lifestyle try these guys; http://www.shortstayapartments.com.au/index.asp

Various CBD locations, new or near new apartments.

I found them ideal when I brought the family along on a buisness trip last year.

You don't specify if the wedding is north or south of the city or in the CBD.

The Oakford Gordon Place in the CBD - Bourke Street I think.

I stayed there a while ago in an serviced apartment (they have heaps of them)and it was brilliant value for what you got....not sure if it has gone up since i've been there but give it a look.

Tip - check what parking is included and how much. parking in the CBD through hotels is never included in their standrd rates and can be bloody $$$$$

Join the ACCOR accommodation club (Advantage plus, Novatel is part of the Accor chain) $230 per year. This gives you 1 free night and as many other nights as you like for half price, 50% off meals as well. Rates are per room not per person and up to 2 kids stay for free.

Makes for quite a cheap holiday

Well having stayed in Melbourne, often with the family (wife and 3 sons) we have stayed at many self contained appartments in Melbourne CBD. Beats the hell out of hotel rooms. often stay at the top of Exhibition St in the Saville Appartments (normally about 170 a nite) they are prob 4 stars. Then there is the Paramount, then Melbourne Short Stay Appartments, there are a huge amount of them, just depends on what your budget is my friend
