Default What would you pay to be V8Supercar fast

How much would you be prepared to spend to buy a race car that has lap times as fast as a V8Supercar? What it was also capable of doing 10 second quarters?

What type af car are we talking about first.......... If it was an older model car, I wouldn't pay a hell of a lot, But if it was like a DJR with the times your talking about, I would hand over $100'000.oo..... But that is off coarse if I had the money.

How much for a 250 twin Supercart? I think you can get a decent one for around $8000 - $10000 new.
P.S Knowing you also have a liking for F5000, what's a good original worth? I'm not sure....

F5000 - around $180,000 for a restored car. You wouldn't drive one that hadn't been restored.

That open wheeler on Top Gear, it had a supercharged civic type R engine and beat a CBR600 around a racetrack, was 30,000 pounds.

Well most people have been intelligent enough to realise that an open wheeler is the best way of achieving these results.

I'm extremely close to making up my mind to buy a historic open wheeler rolling chassis. I'm not particulary worried about the cost of the chassis, as the Hewland alone is worth 2/3rds of the chassis value and I figure if I sell it a few years down the track I will more than get my money back.

What am concerned about is the cost of the motor. Presently looking at $30,000 to $50,000 and as time wears on they will only get rarer and more expensive. They are also a highly stressed motor (piston speeds not far off F1), so ongoing running costs will be high.

Decision decisions.

An engine conversion would be simple and cheap, but then the car wouldn't be eligible for historics. It may however be good for seat time and hill climbs.

You might find they have a diversity of classes now for the historic open wheelers.. I know of two friends that have just bought into this category.. One has a circa 1960's spec car and races in the same field (although not trophy class) as the other that has a 1990's engine bolted to the same frame

Having ridden in a v8 super, i can say you ain't going to match the lap times in one of them... the amount of downforce they have means that they can pull 2G lateral, and 1.5g longitudinal... 1-1.1G is roughly the limits of what you can do with just the tires.. The single seaters xbgs351 is getting into are a wings and slicks class, and the BDA powered F2s(F3s??) weigh in the 400kg region (i seem to recall anyway).
To Quote Colin Chapman, "Adding more power makes you faster in a straight line, adding more lightness makes you faster everywhere"
Even though its not a F5000, it'll still be tremendously rapid, and it'll be outright surgical in its precision to carve corners...

Oh, and if anyone wants a historic Formula V, PM me, I know of one for sale in Adelaide.

Yes F2 or Formula Atlantic. Cars weigh in at little over 400kg. The BDA puts out around 210hp, so they also have a very high power to weight ratio. As for corner carving, the first time I saw one go through the esses at Winton, my jaw dropped. I have had a fascination with them since.

FORD COSWOTH BDA


TOYOTA 4AGE



Look similar? That is because the twin cam 4AGE is basically a road going, mass produced version of the Ford Cosworth BDA twin cam racing engine. They share the same bore and stroke (81mm x 77mm), the same size valves (29.5mm & 25.5mm), and in some versions of the 4AGE very similar combustion chambers, port shapes & sizes. When fully prepared for racing, they both produce similar horsepower figures at similar revs.
