Well just got back from a bit of a ride around the city (Bored as usual) and found my local plod unit doing its usual tricks and I thought I might share.
As some of you may already be aware, I live in the Pine Shire. Anyway pretty much everyone knows about the Pine Rivers bridge on the Bruce Highway. Was coming along through Bald Hills, sitting on 110 (yes, its a 100 zone). This dude in a Cam-ary is sitting next to me doing the same, edging forward and getting the ИИИИs with me for not being the pushover he thinks I am. So he nails it and hits what I estimate to be about 120-130. He zooms off and as I round the bend I see the local police photography unit taking happy snaps of motorists about 400m up the road. This ******** in the Cam-ary flies past, sees the speed camera at the last minute and puts the anchors out just about locking his wheels in the process. As I saw the camera a fair distance off I slowed down to 90 and slid past the camera... nobody got snapped, didn't see any flashes in my rearview either. Then I notice another 1000 m up the road a HWP officer with his very own magical radar revenue rifle taking shots at us. I love it how they always put a camera, then a HWP on this stretch. I've even seen them put three bloody cameras (they are mobile in QLD) in a row and snap any poor bastard consistently speeding through radar alley (as its now known). Anyone ever gotten multiple speeding fines in the one instance? And what is your favourite copper 'trick' or tactic.

There is a school zone near my wifes work that has a large hill just as you come into it, the coppers always sit at the top of the next hill waiting to see who doesn't use their brakes enough.
Come to think of it there is another school around the corner which has almost the identical setup where they do the same thing... |

Most people malign speed cameras for sitting on the bottom of a hill, well around my area there's this decent hill (Blackburn rd. heading towards High st and Syndal for the locals) that people usually floor it up, and lately i've noticed a speed camera just over the top waiting for those who had it over 60.

It's not really a trick, but something that's got me pretty paranoid is those bloody clear lightbars they're using, every late model falcodore in the distance with roof racks has me glancing at the speedo. Nasty tricks aside, they've only gotten me once, and on that occasion it was deserved. Thankfully in our region they don't seem to have the resources to put together teamwork traps etc and they're pretty good about hills/speed zone changes.

XA Coupe pull this if it's too much, but;
Best trick ever was one my old man and his mates pulled. Some guy wouldn't give them his name after they got him down the station. No details or anything, just sat there. Everyone out of the interview room. Token bald, short, tattooed copper (think Angry Anderson) into a tutu, batton, into the interview room. Goes over the guy telling him to give his name or else. Comes out, two guys go back in, suprise suprise he's all talk now. Up before the magistrate, "Your honour a bald tattooed guy in a tutu beat me". Magistrate just laughed at him. How true it is I don't know (perhaps XA coupe knows if it's just a copper's tale?), but I love it. Mind you this is going back a long time (70's at least). |

Got done on Australia day last year, 6.30 in the morning on my way to work, the road was totally empty except for me due to public holiday. If you know Beaudesert road, Browns Plains, its 4 lanes - 2 in each direction. Im doing 90 in an 80 zone (not deliberately, just didnt take enough notice of my speed)and wouldnt you know it, speed camera catches me. Even though I was annoyed, what can you do. If the limit is 80 and you are doing 90, cop it on the chin. I dont blame the cops who booked me as they are only doing there job. In other words, my own stupid fault.

I go thru a few cop "hot-spots" fairly regualry. Anyone in Vic would know the Western Ringroad and the Calder Freeway. It's funny what people do to try and avoid coppers or how coppers act if someone is doing something suss.

I read in the Herald Sun yesterday that cops are standing on overpasses with cameras and radioing a patrol car further down the road to pull the speeding car up. A guy was going to contest it in court because he wasn't able to see the alleged speed displayed on the radar gun.

Another thing I've noticed is that on the pacific motorway (between Brisbane and the Gold Coast), they will usually only ever put their speed camera 4x4 under the overpasses - coppers hate sunlight it seems. Maybe they're Vampires? :P

That's why they took one of the cameras down after that.

When people wouldn't give me sufficient details to correctly identify them I just arrested them no matter what the offence. They are required by law to give a correct name ( 1st point of proof is Identity .. that you are who you say you are and you were there at the time of the offence ). If they don't .. in the slammer. Nearly everyone stops stuffing you around when you explain that .. the others get a free ride back to the station and some time to sit in an interview room or cell. After a while it gets boring and they realise it's a hollow 'victory' and give it up. |

The usual stealth procedures employed in my part of the world.
Unmarked cars - Pajeros, magnas, Impresa, Foresters, and Camry wagons used for speed camera installations, all different colours. most with BLACK tinted windows. when they're parked and visible they have started leaving their indicator or hazards on, appearing to be a motorist pulled over on their 'phone or broken down. Most now park off the road in the bushes, or another road and run an extension lead out to the camera... sometimes up to 30 m away ! I guy I know one day pulled over to take a ИИИИ, wandered into the bushes and nearly tripped over a lead running out to a camera he had not even seen. the cameras are now being changed over to the smoke pack size ones on a tripod, Mat black in colour. they used to be a dirty great big thing quite easy to spot, light grey in colour, then later with a black cover. multiple cameras on the one bit of road. the first set up really obviousl to be seen, then another a couple of kms down the road really well hidden to get the drivers that speed up 'because there won't be any other camera on the same bit of road.' Easily spotted laser toting marked cars / bikes with a really well hidden camera further down the road..... Unmarked mobile radar working in conjunction with another car behind them that pulls over detected speedsters kms from where you were detected.... and the unmarked car continues on down the road... Unmarked cars appearing to want to 'run' others from the lights on freeways. A bloody Camry driven by a plain clothes copper did this in front of me the other week, the guy in a rattly old VP took the bait and was pulled over further down the road by the same car. Oh, and the Camry even squealled away from the lights !!! RBT's now set up in non arterial roads, sometimes country back roads. (this is not a criticism though!!) A work colleague got booked last year for exceeding 05 (blew 065), the coppers saw him walk out of a pub and get into his car...... he literally only had to move it a couple of hundred meters around the corner to a hotel car park. They followed him into the hotel car park and nailed him when he parked. They later told him they had been parked near the pub watching for people to leave and get into their car. Actively enforcing temporary speed zones ( road works etc) even when the road works aren't taking place... weekends, public hols etc. I'm sure there's heaps of other tricks, thats about all I know about.

back in the day when paper licences were the thing,i know of stories where ppl whom had none use to drive with their mates licences in toe.
and for the radar and hwy cop trick they use this all the times its a common thing just when you think your clear to open it up you get done Big time by the cop up the road.. hence why you shouldnt speed up right after a radar car/van. i have a 4wd 0-100 in 30mins : |

As all of us Queenslanders know "Every K over is a dollar ah I mean killer"
On the Marlborough - Sarina road the coppers normaly run in 2s or 3s at about 5km spacing. On the way down to the airport this morning I got pulled over by the Highway Patrol.... "I have reason to believe you have a radar detector, you registered on my RDD". He was most confused that his soopa doopa RDD detected my SATNAV but went away without harrassing me. |

Around here, they pre-occupy themselves either hiding on the "blind corners", or the thick shubbery that always seems to be at the bottom of a hill on the freeway's or dual carrige ways. It's rare to see them anywhere else.

Are you kidding. Were they writing infringements for this ? That's really low. Why could'nt you have simply said that you were making other motorists aware of a potential traffic hazard ? Which is what a bloody parked car / kerbside cash register is.

If you put your lights from off to parkers to low beam and back again, I think is un-bookable, as a lot of people drive with their low beams on most of the time, and because they are low beam, they cant be used to dazzle? I would contest a fine like that, if I only used my low beams, otherwise it would be silly to call them low beams, and be able to use them freely, if they were able to dazzle other drivers.

on erskine park road around the corner from me...
i came off the M4 and turned left as usual, havin a squirt with another p-plater... i didnt go past the limit as there were heaps of cops around cause of the bashing at the quix in st clair, anyway, gooing along this dark patch (cause it was at night), and ahead at the lights, there was a copper chick in the middle of the road with a "stop police" sign pulling over people and lining up behind a HWP car getting booked for speeding.. she had 3 lined up when i drove past : so the copper with the radar gun was hiding up the road somewhere and radioing to the chick telling her which cars to pull over :

we were done illegally, outside of gladstone, the cops had pulled up the car in front (we could see it in the distance) booked the car and then let the car go, we were doing 100 (with cruise control & towing a trailer), cops pull us over saying we were doing 123km, they showed us the gun (when we asked) but wouldn't show us the ticket they had just written for the car that had pulled out probably 200m in front of us. We know we were not going that fast, not much we could do - the gladstone cops are pr*ks, even if we had fought it we had no proof.
