I FINALLY got my Ls!!! WOOHOO!!!

I'm 20, didn't bother learning to drive a few years ago, but a few months ago, I decided it was time (plus, I just bought a car, and its on its way from Japan now)

anyhoo, 3rd visit, 4th time attempting the test, 100 bux later, and FINALLY I passed!!!

first time, I got all the give way questions right, no sweat. Got two too many of the multiple choice wrong. heh

second time, I failed the give ways TWICE!!!

heh, alway, today I went back, sat the test, giveways no problems, multiple choice.... PERFECT!!! all right!!! yay!!!

guess actually looking at the rule book paid off :p hehe

I went for my first drive yesterday...

a month after getting my Ls... :P

anyway, we started off driving around a carpark, that was kewl.

dad didn't appreciate me stopping with the front wheels (front wheel drive car) in the mud, then accellerating quickly, and spinning the wheels.. hehe

then I drove home along the back streets, ran over two rumble strips, and came about a centre metre from a gutter traveling at about 45km/hr (dad said it was a tight bend, and that you couldn't take it at 50km/hr, so I tried it :p lol

You get that, QLD will be adding another thousand kilometres of the stuff on rural highways.

I was in no hurry to get them, why should I be?

I have nowhere to go, but now I'm working on the other side of the city, and the 1+ hour long bus trip is getting tiring.

plus, I bought a car from japan, that will be here in a month, so I figured I should learn

Do you read SA's driver handbook? Do so, it is recent this 7th edition with new updates on the way, again. Pdf 10mb.

Yes, but I prefer the printed versions myself, far more handy and I suggest ALL candidates make the purchase - so don't worry about the $5, its $10 in NSW - it use to be $23!!

IF you get into strife later, take this option, it is 'defensive' in emphasis.

I'm in no hurry to get my P's anyway, hence waiting a month before even driving after getting my Ls

I reckon the age of driving should be raised... too many immature dickheads racing around the streets causing accidents and stuff...

I mean, where do 16yo's have to drive anyway? mummy and daddy have been taking them to school for the last 10 or 11 years anyway, so why do they need to drive NOW?

are you allowed to drive a v8 on L plates in SA?
I thought they changed some laws to stop inexperienced drivers useing high powered cars

they haven't changed the laws here reguarding V8's and turbo cars, no...

they did change the laws about other things though.

you now have to be on your Ls for a minimum 6 months (before, there was no minimum) you also have to do something like 50 hours of logged driving with a fully licensed driver, before you attempt to get your Ps. plus other things have changed.

Im in NSW I think our laws were changed to stop new drivers driving high powered cars.

'Cause they can? I got my license as soon as possible, as with my learners.

I think you'll find most guys/boys at 16 are dying to get behind the wheel, just because you were in no rush, doesn't mean others werent.

So they can start learning. Get behind the wheel, get experience on the road, do deffensive and advanced driving courses and basically start the long road to driver education and saftey. In an ideal world of course.

I for one couldn't wait to get my licence. I have a mate who is 24 and just got his P's. Believe me, you can see a vast difference in driver ability between myself and him. I've been driving for 8 years, he's been driving for just on 8 months (includoing L's)

Age is a factor when it comes to maturity of a driver, but believe me, even though this guy is 24, he's not as skilled as most 20 year old drivers out there. Just because you're older when you first get behind the wheel doesn't mean your any safer.

Also, it's to easy to get your L's in my opinion. All of this 'keep going each day till you get it right' doesn't teach potential drivers anything about LEARNING the road rules - just keep guessing till you get an exam which you get all correct. That's right, just keep guessing which lane you need to be on a roundabout and who has right of way - till one day it doesn't work and that semi didn't have enough braking room....

p.s. - this isn't directed at you mate - congratulations on getting you're L's!! I'm just talking about things in general... Have fun driving

Generally I'm usually a bit worried when someone says it took them multiple attempts to get there L's - because the P plate test won't be easier. If you failed previously because you didn't look at the rule book - congratulations, you wasted your own time and money by taking the test under prepared. Don't do that when going for your P's, because by the time you go for your licence you should be aiming for 90%+, not just a bare pass. Its better to hit the road as a licenced driver trained to make less mistakes from the beginning.

I suppose my experience with people who take a few attempts to get there L's usually is they end up being very ordinary drivers. If you don't know the road rules sufficiently, then there's a chance you could end up in a prang because of it. I had a strong grasp of road rules before I went for my L's because I was already mixing it with traffic on main roads as a cyclist - 5000 kms a year.

I got my L's first time at 17 with 2 questions wrong which were pointed out to me so I was shown the correct answers and got 94% on my P's driving test when I was 19 and I could have done better. I waited till 19 to get my licence because I was studying and couldn't afford lessons, until my sister went away for a year, allowing me to use her car and my parents paid for the lessons so I could use the car
