Default Comm Games Lanes now active

Given that there's been little publicity - a heads up for Melbourne Members, the Commonwealth Games Lanes are now active (Indicated by signs, blue lines, and a Blue "GL" painted in the lanes). I believe its a $165 fine for using them, and I'm not sure how many demerit points. Details of where they are are available on the Comm Games website.

I was in Batman Av last Thursday and watched as police booked motorists turning left off the Swan Street Bridge into Batman Avenue. I questioned the office as to why, and his response was "how else are we expected to run the games.' Given the poor publicity given to traffic changes, I thought this was a bit rough, and when I said that the games didn't start until next week and why we'nt they just gvining warnings, he suggested I ring his boss.

It really ИИИИed me off as rather than standing on the corner and telling motorists they couldn't turn (pro-active policing), they chose to stand 50 mtrs down the road and book people. I was really incensed because I could see no signs that a left turn was not permitted. Don't get me wrong, I'm a strong supporter of Victoria Police (involved in Neighbourhood Watch and Police Community Consultative Committee), but what they were doing was just wrong.

I think you’re missing the whole point. Think of how many lives they’ve saved by doing this. If they sat at the intersection and advised people, hundreds, no thousands of people could have been killed. It’s actually a proactive way of cutting the road toll. Because you donate $165 to that incompetent fool in Spring Street, that money can’t be used to buy fuel to run your car therefore reducing the amount of time you spend on the road and in turn reducing the chances of being killed by some motorist who’s too busy watching their Speedo because they don’t want to be booked for three k’s over the limit instead of watching where they’re going.

It’s a safety thing… really.

Cheers, Danny

The comm games are just a big toss the state will spend far more money on them then they will make. Waste of the tax payers money as is the norm in Vic.....makes me sick :

You would think there would be scope for warnings before the Games actually start...

FirstFord, i'd have to agree with you. There hasn't been THAT much publicity of what roads we can and can't use. I hardly goto inner Melb and i get lost and start taking short cust to try and get to certain places. I think it is a bit rough and surely there is a better way of communicating to the public.
This is also another reason why i harldy ever goto inner Melb. I'm gonna hate going to work for the next to weeks (I work just off Bell St. in coburg) cause there are going to traffic jams and gonna take ages to get there on the Calder

I work in the CBD and noticed the lane markings yesterday on my way to work. I know what they're for but wasn't aware they were booking people for using them already, that bites!!!!

I caught a cab in Melbourne yesterday, and the cabby was really struggling with the road closures and the blue lanes... and it was really quiet with the public holiday.

Hate to see how it goes with peak hour this morning.
