Default Rogue Traders - My Sharona

Am I the only one who thinks that the Rogue Traders "Watching Me, Watching You" is a huge rip-off of My Sharona?

Same guitar riff and in the middle, even some of the lyrics are the same...

Nope, not the only one. My wife and I were watching sunrise and saw that crap. Why can't people write their own stuff anymore?

It is really bad with her 'singing' (I use that term loosely) and wrecking My sharona like that :jab:

Why can't these so called up and coming singers/bands get their own music and leave the greats alone... Its like that Lee Harding ruining 'eye of the tiger'........ how dare he!!!!!!!!!
yeah yeah, get over it....... :

Yeah, that's where I saw it - bloody big nose rabbiting on about the "self written" album

Talk about ignoring the elephant in the room

A bit like Courier Mail touting their new format without using the word "Tabloid"

The Elephant in the room

Yep, rogue traders are killing a classic. Don't mind some of their stuff... but that one is just bad.

I really get sick of modern music. Real musicians don't get radio play these days. It's just this manufactured/marketed pop crap. Basically grab any old song and modernize it, grab the music to old songs and add your own lyrics, grab old lyrics and add your own crap attempt at music!!!! :

Ahh thats what that song reminds me of. I always hear the start expecting something that I know but I could never figure out what the song was.

I hear the start, get all excited then Izzy pops in and I get over it.

It IS a sample of My Sharona. If you want to hear the original, go hang out at weddings or 50th birthdays! Rogue Traders have publically acknowledged it is a sample, so no great detective work required! (Who knows, may have even paid to use it?).

As for stuff being "original", what isn't sampled/covered is written by one of a handful of peopl ewho sell the lyrics off to record companies anyway.

Music gets covered, so what? Tastes change and we get a different tilt on things second time around.

so by this are you implying no-one can have an opinion on what they like or don't like?... Yes I have heard quite a few songs rehashed that sound terrible, but have also heard a few that sound better than the originals ever did..

I don't care if an artist pays to use someone else's song, music whatever.. half their luck........... but that doesn't mean I am going to automatically like it and not say I prefer the original!!!!!!!!!!!!
Each to their own....

As a result of listening to that rubbish song, I have had 9 Coronas by Weird Al Yankovic stuck in my head.

I didn't suggest you weren't entitled to your own opinion. Take a couple of deep breaths, have a cuppa and perhaps re-read the post. Its only a small joke about the era of the song (the same thing could be said about "Summer of '69", "Funky Town", "Rock Lobster", "Bus-Stop" et al- All wedding and 50th songs) then a reference to modern music. No where did I attempt to remove any person right to an opinion. :

For what it is worth, I don't particularly like the song. I was responding to the suggestion it is a "rip off"; its not, Rogue Traders have credited the work.

Each to their own. In a way, I'm kinda enjoying all these samples/remixes of 80's songs, kinda feels like we've stepped back in time a bit :

Some are too subtle to notice though. Noone noticed sweet dreams by the eurythmics being sampled in the latest beyonce (at least i think it is) song?

But there are more creative ways to sample music than to just cut and paste a chunk of someone else's music into your recording. For example the JJJ news theme has a a sample of #### the police by NWA in there somewhere. As for covers compare the Divinyls (a band Rogue Traders would like to emulate I'm sure) version of "I'll make you happy" with the original by the Easybeats and you'll see that they didnt just copy it they did reinterpret it in their own style.
Regards,
Tote
