Default New ADR rules = less power (except for Ford)

Here is an interesting article about new ADR laws.

MANY of Australia’s most popular new vehicles have been detuned in order to comply with strict new national exhaust emissions laws that came into effect this year.

Market-leading models from brands such as Toyota, Holden and Nissan are among the cars to come in for a power cut, while other high-profile models have disappeared altogether because of the prohibitive cost of upgrading their engines to comply with the latest regulations.


No more Sportivo's.. YAEHH!

Ford are the only one to increase power and conform to the new ADRs.

Euro III-equivalent Australian Design Rule (ADR 79/01) Emissions Control for Light Vehicles, which came into effect on January 1, 2006.
Yep has been comming for awhile now.

Yep base model Corolla dropped from 100kw to 93 kw i noticed

to be fair ford did get a decent grant from the government to upgrade the engines to EuroIII, so you would expect them not to just throw another cat in the exhaust.

I hope the camery sportivos are gone, they are horrible cars

Are you sure holden did not get this same grant for there alloy tec motor which had to be detuned to meet adr's.

Holden V8's went from 250Kw to 260Kw because of ADR's (forced swap from LS1 to L76).

Ford added the power as part of the BF program, not specifically for the 1/1/06 ADR, although that was one of the factors when planning the BF upgrade. The power increase was not a result of the ADR's rather to make the XR6 (for one) competitive with the SV6 given there claimed "sports" pedigrees.

As for the econotech engine, who cares, Holden lost that edge when they dropped the inline 6 range back in the VL days.

Good balanced reporting again.

Ford got a government grant for the Euro 4 upgrade in a few years time, not for the Copperhead BF Euro 3 engine.

Don't pat yourselves on the back too hard just yet - here are the models that have been axed due to the new emission laws:

GONE:
Ford Econovan
Ford Courier four-cylinder
Holden Adventra V8
Kia Pregio
Mazda E Series
Mazda B Series four-cylinder
Mitsubishi Express 2.0
Toyota Corolla Sportivo

In effect, four fords/mazdas........

I herd holden didn't detune the engine just changed injectors and added cat converters, Someone said the 06 VZ's now run 4 of them??.

Yep has been comming for awhile now.
There was also a new drive by noise requirement which came into effect from 1st January 2006 (ADR 83/00) - Ford article. This could also have a negative impact on engine performance if the engines are too noisy.

Youd assume as Ford Oz that has been designing the I6 that they would be able to get the engine to comply more easily than Holden who do a put together job.

This is the main reason as to why holden are nearly a full 12 months late on the release of the VE. :

Atleast they havn't axed the Courier altogether. I like the V6 Courier, they go hard! The Econovan was a pretty good commercial seller. I can see alot of sales going to Hiaces and those Kia vans. They really needed to do some major work to those Econovan engines. They only started running Fuel injection in the late 90's, and the current one still uses a dizzy I beleive.

The Kia Van was axed, so it is basically the Hiace and the Starwagon that is left.

The Camry and Corolla Sportivo are very different cars. The Camry is just a tarted Camry with a body kit.

The Corolla Sportivo is very different to the standard Corolla. 141kw vs 100kw (or 93kw) The Sportivo has a close ratio 6 speed firmer springs and bigger brakes. As well as many different interior features not available in the normal Corolla range.

No they are not late. Set a date out as they did, Then they moved it forward, And then moved it back to the first date they set, Thats not late that's on time;).
