Default the piccys of the (very dirty) escort

hey guys i went and took sum piccys of the esky today. its really dirty!!!!
can everyone give me some pointers on what i should to to fix her up to summernats standards.... thanks
on the pic with the speedo under the needle is a 03798...... thats how many ks it done with the rebuilt motor .

mum said theres enough spiderwebs in the engine to be scared really scared

I personally wouldnt wash it first up. Dont run the risk of pushing any wet leaves into the nooks and crannies of the body, especially into any small rust holes...

Throw on some thick rubber gloves for the spiders, start picking out all the leaves, foliage etc by hand when it is still dry.. Get most of it out by hand then with compressed air or a vacuum cleaner suck up the last of it. Once you have the bulk of the rubbish out of the way then introduce it to Mr. CarWash and Water

Tip 1: Get rid of the freakin' spiders!!!

Once you get it to your place, give it a good clean out and start working on the most urgent repairs.

That's a nice Escort you've got yourself there, take care of it and it will take care of you. And of course... enjoy. ;)

im hoping, with all that crap over the bonnet cowling, that its not rusted away...
its not good to have all that wet leaves on there.....:(

other than that it looks like quite a straight esky.

summernats standards????? it'll take afew years and quit a few grand.....
start off with getting it cleaned up, take the motor out paint it and stick a 2litre in it, then you can go from there.....

some mods you might want to think about.... :


if you want to regester it you wont be able to put twin sidesuckers on it due to the ADR's so a 38/38 or 40/40 down draft or a holly carb.....
if your not going to drive it on the road a lumpy cam and lightened flywheel would get it going....
extractors and 2.25 straght through exhaust....
keep the 3.77: diff or go a 3.99:1/4.11:1 for acceloration- LSD...
mk2 cortina radiator and thermo fans....
steering quik rack...
eurathane buses all round..
billstein shocks...5 point rear end....
bore it out....
ported head...
high compression pistons...
electronic ingnition
bigger brakes and of course convert to disks all round...
5 speed manual..close ratio short shift..
good tyres

if you want more
EFI...
stroke it...
turbo/supercharged...intercooler
NOS....


/you will also need to change the valves so you can run unleaded petrol....

Exactly... no use doing it half assed from the get go, he has a goal and hopefully wont lose sight of it as he rebuilds the Eski, so many people myself included do things then have to redo then again later to refine the finished product

how was i having a go at him.
you've got a great little car there. you dont have to all those mods to get going they can be made to go pretty quikly with little money, but for a summernats car it has to be made extreme...
and extreme=$$$$$
now that you have an escort you wont be able to get enough of them...enjoy

thanks guys i dont think ill have the $$$$$ to do all of that lol
i want to take out the back seats (less waight and it should look kool). clean all the spiders out (ewwww spiders)....... i want a fair bit of power at the wheels but i got not much money so what cani do to increase the power???
i still whant to drive it arownd the streats so what mods can i do tho have the power and still drive it arownd on the streets of mbfnw????

Try and find a 4.1 diff centre out of an esky panel van. That will give you a little more oomph around town!

taking the back seats out wont do much, i took mine out to get reaplostered had them out for ages put them back i and it was still the same..


start with extractors, exhaust and high flow air fillter..

4.11:1 might be alittle bit steep unless racing it...

a rejetted weber 32/36 carby out of a 2lt would go in your favor...

Just a quick update ....... she isnt quiet here as yet ....... Just organising a car trailer to bring her home.

I actually saw her yesterday and the piccys didnt do her much justice. All of the crap on the bonnet is only a rug with the original grille in it ........ a wash & polish & she will come up well for starters for the boy ......... The spider webs are fair dinkum though ...... ewwww at spiders :P

They pumped up the tyres when he first saw her & they are still up .... not bad considering they were brand new 10yrs ago and just went down ........ they will do him for a little while yet while hes playing before any rego comes near ;)

Only thing that concerns me a bit is the rust on the quater panel ....... he might have to do a panel beating course at TAFE once his pre apprenteship mechanics one is finished to learn how to weld properly :P

Never hurts to further yourself. ;)

I'm glad to hear that he's got himself such a nice little esky, keep an eye out for rust on the c pillar, they're notorious for that unfortunately.

cool. escorts rule (not quite as much as a coon though) and I used to co-own a '76 Escort L coupe that was driven up fire breaks, through streams, cros country al on standard suspension and drivetrain and never complained a bit. It was me uncles, then my grandads, them mine/my older bro's. I handed over my keys after a few months and he had it for years - it only died a 3 years ago when a SUV driver in Welly tried to get in the back seat without getting out of his car first.

PS: There's also a '77 Escort 45 panel-van in the drive behind my Fairmont - but it's my little bro's this time... am I'm gonna make that baby purr - as long as he pays for the parts!!!!!!!!

PS: me bro threw a Cortina 2L motor and box under the coupe and man did it fly!
Couldn't even feel the road on the tires when screaming down the Wellington motorway!
