5 prong torx bit

Hey guys just curious to know where you guys that have taken off your steering wheels aquired one from.........i'm in NZ and tried numerous places,Repco,engineering supplies etc.............all with no joy....i don't really want to take it to Ford because they will rip me,and besides after reading your step by step instructions i reckon even i could handle it myself

In the kits from repco there are a couple of torx bits that even though they are not the same they will be sufficient to remove the screws. Done this the other week when l changed mine.

The screwdriver bit with the middle cut out works (sort of U shaped).

Also, If you ask for "Torx plus" bits, that's what you need - not sure of size, but 25 or 30 might be it. I asked for 5 sided torx bits, and they had no idea what I was talking about. Ask for torx plus bits, and there is sudden understanding.

go to bunnings or somewhere like that - you can get a set of 3/8 drive torx bits for about $35.

come on time to get your hand off him this is a specialised tool and you cant even buy them of FORD so all you backyarders <Bunnings is not your friend on this one maybe look at the BBQ s while your there or a new mower

Snap On sell them, and Gas Weld etc. ie specialist tool suppliers.

well they must be 'different' torx bits then. maybe they shouldn't call them both torx bits as they're both obviously different... how confusing could this be?

i got a set of these from bunnings to install a tow pack on a EL futura. T50 torx bolts were supplied from ford with the tow pack.

maybe this bit for the steering wheel is different from your standard torx bit.

until we know for sure, how about you get your hand of it in the meantime?

I throw my 2 cents in here... from what I can see there are a few main 'types' of torx bit. The most common is a 6 star/prong configuration and can be easily sourced from pretty much anywhere. The second is the 5 star type which, for some reason, is much much harder to source and can only really be found in specialist tools shops (I have managed to purchase them from Ford in the past, but that was a fair while ago). Of course then the there are the third type that have a central 'pin' to be negotiated - seemingly only electricians and secret agents seems to have these!

There seems to be no rhyme nor reason why different ones are used here or there other than to ensure car manufacturers maintain consistency in the 'give you the 5hits' arena. I suppose it does provide different levels of 'security' which, for good reasons, may need to be put in place to protect us from ourselves.

As for having your hand on it........... what's wrong with that?

I had major probs to buy one of Ford dealers & it cost a fair bit out of 5 dealers only one would sell it to me. It is called a airbag tool Ford P/N 301PR

I tried ford and they wouldnt let me have one saying I need some certificate to say I can remove air bags?

The guy said 'well looks like youll have to get us to remove it, $80' but had to tell him too late the u shape screwdriver for $2 beat you too it hahah

I think it's Repco that have a full set of 5 point torx bits intheir latest trade catalogue. I will have a look tomorrow & confirm it.

Mate, do you know a wrecker..read, auto recycler.
They have to use them to strip their au's. If you know one really wel, I'm sure he'd let you borrow it for an hour or two, alternatively take your steering wheel with you to the wreckers, borrow one and sit out front and do the change over there..Don't buy one as you probably won't ever use it again.

I was lucky enough to have a mate working at Holden dealership that got a lend of it over the weekend for me to use & do the job.

I did & have still got it & your right I only ever used it once but if for some reason I need to remove the s/wheel on a AU or BA I have one in the tool box without trying to see if I can borrow one of a wrecker or book in a Ford dealership for a 10 minute job.

BAs reverted back to allen key bolt (or maybe 6 sided torx). But BA is definitely not 5 sided torx. The main bolt holding the wheel is a T50 size 6 sided torx, but I assume we are talking about the security bolts that hold the airbag cover on? These are the 5 sided ones with the pin in the middle (hence the need for a U shaped screwdriver).

I got my torx bit T30IPR from Repco Auto Parts.

The bolt is a T30 IPR bolt, and normal torx bolts wont fit, i know this as i have a set of torx tamperproff bits(the ones with the holes in the middle) and none of the bits in the set fit the bolt in the wheel.

Yes it is the security bolts on the air bag the Ford dealer that eventually sold me one did say it fitted the bolts holding the airbag on the BA's as well. I tried everywhere to purchase one about 3 years ago & no one had them bar Ford dealers. They are 5 sided Torx bit but have an unusaul offset.

Kind of - but they're the 6 sided version. I have a full set of them.

Duh...You drive your car to the wreckers with the old steering wheel fitted..Duh..and take the new steering wheel with you in the boot, back seat, front seat and fit it at the wreckers or wherever.Duh....But then I guess that some would try to drive their car without the old steering wheel on the car, so I thought I had to elaborate for you...

Well,gave up trying to get one and booked into Ford at $80+gst,spoke to a mechanic and he tried to convince me that they should do it as it has to be plugged into something when finished to reset some code and the bag could go off ????and to get rid of airbag warning light
Then was speaking to the guy who i bought the car off who is a mechanic and has his own workshop and we are doing new rotors and pads on the weekend on my car.Told him what Ford said and he said he's got the bit and can do it(done heaps)..................now i'm not sure which way to go,opinions would be much appreciated

The only thing you need to do when removimg the airbag is disconnect the battery 1 minute before removing the airbag screws, then reconnect battery when finnished the job. No codes should be logged when doing the job this way.
Remember to have radio code handy before diconnecting battery.
Do not use a memory saver when working with the airbag.

What a load of piffle just as AUXRV111 posted just disconnect the battery & know your radio code & have your wheels straight. The job is fairly easy.

I've changed about 10 steering wheels now, using the battery disconnect method, and never had one go off yet. In fact, on one of those, I forgot to disconnect the battery and it still didn't go off, and no fault codes or anything recorded. You can also just pull ht eairbag fuse instead of disconnecting the battery, though the battery method offers more piece of mind. The first one I ever got done was by Ford, and it cost me only $30. $80 is just a rip off.
