Default world of warcraft??What is going on here?

Today I went to Dick Smith and bought World of warcraft only to discover after installing it that it requires me to create and internet account.Where it gets a bit shady is that I am led to believe that I must pay a subscription fee to keep playing this online. Is this right? Is this true?

I gather you didn't read the box?

I'm sure every box of it has it quite clearly that there is a monthly cost & internet connection required....

Good luck trying to return open software tho...

hangon your ment to get 30days or something free.... what does the box or manual say?

also after that period you have to pay to play only by credit card i think...

hey its fair as it means no one can pirate the software, the makers make money, you get to play a controlled game cause i mean honestly if you paid for it would you bother cheating and hacking and stuff

Dicko's and EB have a 7 day return policy where you can opt for a refund or exchange, even opened, hence why I buy my games from EB (when 2 for $50 sale is on though!)

Problem with that is that if you want to play them online, you go into the store and buy a game and find out the previous owner burnt it and took the CDkey so its useless to play :P

Thats the reason i DO NOT shop at EB, heheh.

World of Warcraft aka "wow" is addictive and I was playing it for 4 months before I quit. The reason why I quit was that it was eating up too much of my time.

It is a good game and it is worth the $15-$20 a month to keep playing.

Useless- You will need to buy credit before you start playing, either via credit card or pre paid gamecards that you can buy from the shop, even thou you get one month free.

I might run it over back the car up and start undoing my cylinder head bolts instead.Much more fun.

ah, ok so.... I play world of warcraft, and to be fair its not the first, nor will it be the last game to charge a subscription fee. But there is reason to it, and personally I think it's justifiable.

The game is a MMO, or massively multiplayer online game. So basically you connect to a server on the internet and can play with up to 3000 other people. Now the servers and internet bandwidth that Blizzard use aren't free, or cheap, and they have to pay these ongoing costs somehow. FYI, there's over 6.5million current subscribers. And if you look at a first person shooter (by comparison), the online servers that you can play on with those games are usually provided by internet service providers.

Also the game is huge. I've been playing (casually) for 9 months now, and there's still heaps of things i haven't done in the game. I basically haven't bought or played any other new games, and i'm still not bored of this one. But don't get me wrong, I don't sit in front of my computer all day everyday. I go out and socialise with my friends, friday and saturday nights etc... Everything in moderation.

There are downsides though, sometimes it can be a pain because the servers are in America (internet problems) etc... but overall its pretty good.

I don't think EB will allow returns of some MMO's because of that actually. Don't know for sure, and i don't know about dick smiths. Although if i remember correctly, wow doesn't have a CD key, so you might be ok to return it.

There's another online game called Eve or Eve Online. With that you download the game for free and then pay the subscription fee to play online. That's a much better system IMHO.

This game is addictive. I played three 10 day trials. I only played it cause a few mates had them and it cost nothing to do the trials. I seen this game ruin people, dont play the game. If you want a free rpg online game play silkroad online or something. Only game i really play is counterstrike source

My odd 22yo nephew and his g/f whom he 'converted' to nerd status play the game.

He sells 'stuff' often for hundreds of dollars US, buys other stuff and basically spends lots on money on this subscription game, but heck, its his income and he can do as he likes naturally.

Strange lot these Warcraft people - he and g/f dropped up to Newcastle recently to meet fellow gamers - wide ages 16 - 50+yo's, they stayed at a place rented by a 25 and 27yo for a weekend, total nerds in the real sense, never worked these two other folk in their entire lives, never bothered with gf's before - but like her certainly, - they don't get or go out much or at all.

Warcraft is a 'life' thing, its many a persons sole social interaction, often for years.

Don't get me wrong, many a super intelligent person play the game, but their lives are well, 'messed'.

Not all who play the game are bludgers, nephews mate is a fully trained male nurse in mental health, another runs a PC shop, he in turn builds em.

I can find either no time to ever play such games, and in anycase would die from sheer boredom if I did.

Enjoy gaming - sure; (TWO gaming channels on TV C-Band satellite, 'NOW TV' on Asiasat 3S in English and one on Asiasat 4), but FFS make an effort to go out at least once every 6 months.

That is truly sad. Sounds like this kind of thing is as bad an addiction as drugs (not in the health stats, but in the damage it does to your social skills)

I played Star Wars Galaxies for a year, then moved on to EverQuest II. Online gaming is a fanstastic experience if you have the money and time. Unfortunately, I have neither. Studying takes up too much time and it eats through your money. ~60 bucks for 3 months is not cheap for a student, esp when nobody will employ you cuz you are too old!

They want 15 year olds.

It's fun, but yeah, once you get in, hard to get out.

On EverQuest II, I am level a level 55 Guardian (tank). However, my guildmates (my 4th guild! -others closed/merged) who play for 12+ hours everyday are level 70 with superior gear. Because they are 15 levels above me, they never want me with them. So what's the point. I prefer to play 386-486 games. Try Master of Orion or Star Control II (SC2 MUST have DosBox, unless you get the 3DO ported version, "The Ur-Quan Masters")

My cousin plays this game for about 6-7 hours a day and you hardly see him. He used to be alright but this crap warps your brain. Seriously though Warcraft used to be a pretty entertaining game now it's just garbage.

You spend 90% running around attacking monsters... I'd rather be hooked on drugs

I've read this article about a guy in China who played a game similair to WoW. Apparently he had this super-duper weapon, and he gave it to his mate to hold onto. Well his mate ended up selling this weapon for real cash. The owner of the weapon became so ****ed off he actually commited suicide.
