I was speaking to my sister in law the other day , and she enquired if i had noticed the increase of American produced ads hitting our TV lately. Not watching that much TV, I said not really. She (works for an advertising agency)said that there had been a 60% increase in yank ads showing up on our TV stations (A result of the FTA) Here are some she mentioned...(can't remember them all)Taylor made golf clubs. Gillette m3 power nitro. Lux soap. Jeep. Mattel funtastic. Revlon. Jenny Craig. Ritz chips. Subway. Tooheys New. Evinrude. Hasbro. Victoria Principal? This is not a Yank bash, but is this going to be a another eroding of our australian TV input?.

I've noticed that they use American ads using an Australian voice over. I guess most of the companies that do this are American and they have probably spent big money developing their ads over there (so they know the ads work).
It does annoy me though, and as you say it is eroding Aussie tv input and our Aussie culture along with it. |

The voice over ad's come from Europe as well, but the worse ad's are easily the American Colgate commercials. Not even with a aussie voice over! Lazy!
It surely is eroding Aussie television input and at the same cheap-efying ads. Most American ones look cheap, overacted and don't sit well with me. If it's going to be cheap at least film it in Australia. I mean it doesn't cost much to mop a floor, wash your hair or brush your teeth in Australia. I mean who the hell is that guy in the Ritz chips ad? He's about as famous as the lot in "Celebrity" Survivor. (Excluding Imogen Bailey).

Yeah its annoying, that's why that 'Real McCoy' ad with the terrible aussie accent saying 'bloody oath' was so funny, because it was a complete pi$$-take of all the sorts of ads mentioned here.
But hey, thats what the mute button is for...

Australian TV has been ****. IMO, the downfall was when Big Brother started. Since, we've seen an absolute influx of bull**** reality tv shows which serve no purpose and based around stupid ideas.
What we needs are provocative shows like The Late Show, Full Frontal, Fast Forward and all that...the ones that took the **** out of everything, back when people could actually take a joke, and not sue when offended. The idiocy of the judges over civil cases has destroyed television. Due to the fact that there is crap on TV, I don't watch it. |

TV in general on the decline, including paytv. The US made ads are annoying, more so for their inferior picture quality.......NTSC......

I see where y'all are coming from and agree to come extent... but then i sit back and think "they're just ads".
I mean really... they're only ads. An influx of American advertisements on television hardly signifies the downfall of australian culture. And if something as petty and miniscule as the origin of a television advertisement is enough to unsettle our precious culture... then we deserve everything that we've got coming to us. If anything i'd almost find this general opinion to somewhat hypocritical. Throughout these forums i see nothing but praise for Lost, Prison Break, Top Gear etc. I cant think of a single show with cult like status on AFF that's Australian made. But the networks are criticised because there's no australian produced ads on between their american and british programming? Come now... that's a bit rich. I do find myself watching less and less free to air TV these days tho (except ABC/ABC2)... it just seems that each channel has not only decided on the demographic they are chasing... but they're now starting to typecaste themselves. I'm all for the reforms to media ownership etc. Australian network television needs a big shake up. Keep the buggers on their toes.

who cares its just an ad.
i don't want to see a decline in australian produced programs, but ads? its up to the company and if they've already produced a suitable ad in another country who gives a crap? they still pay the same money to our networks to run the ad so whatever.

american ads do annoy me, but not nearly as much as those damn rivers ads.
i think that if these american companies respect and have any interest whatsoever in the australian demographic, they would make an aussie ad.

And it has bugger all to do with FTA. Australian advertisers have been able to run international ads for about ten years now. And yes, I work in the ad industry

And considering the outright success of reality TV... the millions of people that watch it... the massive amounts of money made in advertising... Are you seriously willing to sit here and claim that those who watch are the "common denominator" and that you are the supreme being? That's about as unaustralian as it gets. Face it mate - reality TV is as australian as anything else that defines us. It doesnt matter how many individuals here on AFF want to get up on their high horse and cry foul about the "downfall of our society". I dont like it any more than you do. But one man cant dimsiss the opinion of a million people.

take away all the American shows off TV and we would be left with even more re-runs of A Country Practice. Most of our locally made TV Commercials are not that creative, so i would rather good quality viewing (for the few times i watch TV) than to watch crap just because it's made here.
