I am driving to brisbane on thursday from Newcastle. I have not done the run for about 2yrs.
To Avoid the traffic. What would be the best way to go. Up Through the inland (Via Tamworth and Glen Innes) Or just up the coast. as per usual. The nasty thing is the ammount of fixed speed cameras along the coast road. I dont speed and Im not worried about them or the Mobile Plod cams. Just uploaded the Speed Camera POI database to the Navman. Talk about big brother. jeeze. !!! |

go the coast road, too much stuffing about going through glen innes, also when you get to St Helena (before byron bay) it used to be a 80 speed camera however in the last week or so they've changed it to 60 and for some strange reason have no signs coming from the hill side of it.
Also remember Operation North roads has been in effect for a week or so, so as well as the camera's you'll have police cars all up and down the highway

I have been told by truckers in the past that if you are going to Cairns, go inland because you wont drive along the arc of the coast (making the drive longer as it is an arc, not a straight line, inland makes a more straight route), but if you're just going to Brisbane, take the coast.

If you go the coast road, there is a short cut that cuts out Ballina, which in holiday times can get really bad. You take a road that says "Teven" about 2 K from Ballina, you can see the big prawn. Follow it over two bridges, it follows the river for a bit, comes to an intersection, turn right, and follow it back to the highway and turn left. It takes about 7 minutes, but in holiday time, will cut out about an hour.

I am in a little place called Manilla 46km from Tamworth and I am heading back to Brisbane on Thursday. The inland road has no road works at the moment as I came down on Saturday. It is a pretty good trip and not as much traffic as the coast road. NSW start school holidays on Friday so you should be right to miss any traffic if you head inland.

Ahh heck, school holidays again! Noisy buggers will be infesting the shopping centres, dang.
I say go inland, helps to have a UHF CB for road conditions. Good luck.

Go Inland, the coast road gets boring, atleast when you go inland you see a bit of country, just make sure you keep on top of your speed as alot of those smaller country towns are heavily policed, the coppers have nothing to do! The worse town for police inforcement is probarly Warwick, i went through there saturday and they had radars set up coming in and going out of the town in the 60 / 80 zones.

One final note - just past Byron there's a massive amount of roadworks on the Pacific Highway. Was in byron this weekend and a lot of people got caught in those roadworks coming down and going back up. Allow plenty of time.
And QLD hols are in their first week - NSW starts this Friday.

Sure you arent talking about Brunswick heads? Its a real shocker at the moment. Worst part of the trip in my opinion.
