Great Debate With or Without Head Light Protectors?

So what are people's thoughts, are they to ugly for the AU XR6 and AU XR8.

Grunter if your watching, I tried to email you but it bounced.

Just curious on people comments, I had this debate with folks at work.
One does not drive a Ford the other Drives a Toyota Corolla.

When I had my AU2 XR8, I always had head light protectors on. I dont mind them either way. My old man took his off for a while and ended up loosing a like to a rock/stone.

They work well and headlights are expensive BUT they are as ugly as it gets and they need holes drilled to have them fitted. I wont have them on my AU.

i dont have them on my AUiii XR6 , dont like the look of them , makes the nose look round .

They look like sh!t on the au xr's. I have never had them on my ute and wont put them on. All the kms worth of country driving I have done and i havent lost a light.

Buy some light skins, and ditch the epitomy of ugly. They just look WRONG! Steve Park and his crew need reaming for some of the things they did on the AU.

I am in two minds, I have them on mine but if I remove them i will have holes in my bumper that will just look terrible. I dont mind the look of them but I think I would prefer them off.

Ugly as. Previous to my BA I was shopping for an AU and absolutely refused to look at any with the headlight protectors installed.

I had them on mine as the AU XR lights fill up with moisture if you let too much water get in around them...

They look shit but
A) save stones.
B) make it easier to clean around the headlight area.
C) stop the headlights from getting moisture in them.

I reckon they look shit on an AU, but if I owned one I would review them becuase when I did some work experiance at a Ford dealer a while back a Falcon came in and the headlight was cracked by a stone and it cost the owner about $400 to replace it, if memory serves me right.

OUCH!!!! I cracked one of my driving lights a while back and I have not been in to replace it yet (light still works so no rush). If this is going to be the cost I'll have to find some way of protecting them in the future.

My motorbike used to have a headlight protector that was attached by small pieces of velcro. That would be an option and saves drilling holes. I won't be putting those standard headlight protectors on my ute.

I've seen the covers on different coloured XRs and didn't think they suited, but thought they looked great on the Silver XR.

: I also liked how it gave a more rounded look to the front end.

Im with Grunter, they look great on some colours (silver being one of them). On others im not keen on them.

And it'd have to be sheer bad luck for a stone to bust a light - would have to be spot on.

I can confirm that around $400 is what it will cost to replace a head light on an AU XR. I replaced a cracked one on my AUII. I don't think the parts are that expensive but they bump up the price in work hours cause the whole front nose has to come off.

I'm happy with the look of the covers on my silver xr. I've seen them on the white and they don't look so hot.

I use, and have used for 6 or 8 years the Aunger Self Adhesive Stick on Headlight Protectors.
Once On you wouldnt know they were there, if a rock hits the film, it absorbs the impact without shattering the light.
These come in a sheet and need to be cut out to suit your car, takes me abour an hour / hour and a half to make a template, cut and fit these.
In my opinion they are well worth it, I run these on both my TS50 and my wifes Mazda 6 ( I reckon the cost of a Mazda 6 front light assembly would break me) and unless you really looked, you wouldnt know they were there. They dont yellow (well after about 4 years they do, so should be replaced) and no dirt or moisture gets between them and the light If you want pics, let me know

Does anyone have any pics of the ED XR style ones? Ive only ever seen a couple of cars with them and Ive been interested in getting some.

When I get new headlights for my EL I will be getting a set of protectors for them because they tend to go yellow without them.

i have some crap on mine cause i bought my XR front off Kerry its some stik on stuff about 8-10 mm thick (perfect for XR's) mayb not ordinary lights and its soft plastic and very absorbing i doubt its the same stuff u use cause it wouldnt look to good cause its so thick

They'd probably look better with colour coded rubbers. It's the black rubber strip that turns me off the most.

The stuff i use is prob only 3 or 4mm thick, works a treat, costs about $60.00 for both headlights

I love them, the only thing I dislike about them is that you have to undo them with a driver to get into the light area to clean them and they get very dirty in behind the protector, other than that I don't have a problem.

I'm not keen on'em and wouldn't put them on my xr but I do agree that they look alright on silver..

I used to have them fitted on my XR, and I don't anymore. Yes they will save $400 for a headlamp change, yes you'll get good aero LOL, but I've seen how these things break up in an accident and it is not pretty.

The hassle involved in taking them off now and again (especially when the nut inside the bracket comes out), plus the replacement cost of them $100 for the entire set if you split something as simple as the rubber. The perspex scratches, and you somehow still get bugs behind them.
