Default Dodge Viper 2008 Model

In their final press conference of the Detroit show, the Chrysler Group focused exclusively on the Dodge brand, and the highlight was the official unveiling of the 2008 Dodge Viper. Driven onstage by NEXTEL Cup driver Kurt Busch, the new Viper SRT-10 dons the brass knuckles to throw down with the Corvette Z06, over which it now holds a 100-horsepower advantage because, you know, 500 horsepower is so passé. The new snake improves upon itself with a revised 8.4L V10 that now dishes out 600 horsepower and 560 lbs of torque. That, in turn, facilitates 0-60 time of under four seconds and a 0-100-0 time that comes in at under twelve ticks. Let the horsepower wars continue! This is fun to watch.

yeah i find the 8.3 a little too slow, lacking in torque too... Perhaps this 8.4 upgrade will fix that :-)

Bag American cars all you like, the cream of the crop are awesome, who gives a hoot about interior etc when you have that much power and presence.

That, the Corvette, and the Ford GT are mighty cars.

No point in having the power without the stability :p

the last model z06 handles SO much better then the last viper it isnt even funny. At least you can use the accelerator around the corner in a vette and now you arent going to end up in the bushes on the side of the road ;)

Having said that, i will reserve judgment on the new viper till i see the stig tear around the track in top gear ;)

Ah yes but Porsche's, in particular older ones, have a reputation of being tale happy and no one says anything bad....

I think its good for a car to have a reputation, Im sure they dont handle that badly.

They certainly do well in events like Le Mans, and the other racing they are involved in.

Seems to do fine in our utes, plus a vast majority of consumers wouldn't know the difference. And if that helps them sell more stangs, as I have heard its good for drag use, then so be it.

I agree its not the best setup, but its proven.

You still on that live axle soap box Sparkie? :evil3: My cars got it, V8 Supercars have got it... well tuned, it ain't that bad. Early Commodores proved IRS != quality suspension! The all new Holden IRS axle tramps, so they are't perfect in mode form either. US Mustangs are muscle cars, not prissy grand tourers.

And considering Mustangs don't have the most balanced chassis and are primarily used by their fanbase for drag racing, why would a Mustang buyer want a heavy, expensive IRS setup when the lighter, cheaper live-axle does a better job at the drag strip?

As good as it is, in terms of looks i still prefer the earlier Vipers, not by much since they are not that different. Infact id still pick this one to own for the refinement even without taking the engine into consideration.

They should at least have the option of IRS for the track guys. The last Cobra had IRS, and they had the proposal to make it a delete option for the strip guys, but didn't eventuate. Would make more sense to have both setups available.

It would be expensive. And what good is IRS when the chassis is horrible? The early IRS Commodore's were garbage, and the Mustang is even worse. You could line up an 03 Cobra with a BA XT and the Cobra would lose on a twisty circuit. They're pure straight line cars. Why would Ford, which is in financial strife, waste so much money on something that won't really help their car sell?
