Cool Is an engineers cert required for XF 6 to V8 change?

I have an xf ute that i would like to convert to a 351 and im wondering what will i have to do to make it legal?

as above. you will have to run Gas as well to make it EPA legal.
easier way is to get a pre 84 XE and change the front end panels over to XF.
drop in a V8 if it doesnt already have one and tell VicRoads (or your states equivilant).
no engineers required.

there is an xf ute 351 .. on gas .. reg/eng cert selling on carpoint - buy it - cheaper in the end

Boxo What state are you in ?

This is what I seen in october last year ..
a XF ute 6cl had no rego on it guy bought it put in 302 clevo took it to get a r.w.c. FAILED
went to vic roads to complain
they said and gave him a print out of the paper
and come to me with it for another r.w.c.
The paper says
Since the FLOOR PAN has not changed since 1979 then it IS EXCEPTABLE to have a motor installed into a verhicle with the same floor pan as offered so long as there is no body alterations and the verhicle meet road worthy standards.

Now Some people will try to argue this But if you are in victoria the best bet is to ring and ring and ring again untill you get someone that knows what they are talking about and get them to STAMP it and send it to you.

A man after my own heart. Having done the same conversion a few years ago I can tell you that it isn't hard at all to do this conversion and have it passed.There are a few variables to it though.Starting with the year model of the XF that you are going to use, as a 1985 model ran on leaded fuel so it doesn't need to run catalytic converters, which in the long run gives you more power with less restriction.Also the firewalls on the 85 model is slightly different to the 86-87 models and makes for an easier fitment of the cleveland motor .The motor that you use for the conversion after being built needs to comply with the with EPA regs etc for the year of the car that it is going into.As has been said running on gas is a good option, but if you go down this track it is advisable to go straight gas and not duel fuel.When it comes time for the engineers certificate he will be looking at all mods and checking that your exhaust and emission systems all comply with the year model of the car. Whichever state you are in ,just give an engineer a call and ask them what is needed for the conversion and they let you know what is required and which way to go about it.Good luck and keep us informed on which way you go.

If you are in Vic you MUST get an engineers certificate. You will also probably NOT get an certificate on a pre 86 XF even on gas. A couple of people I know have successfully got a legally registered XF - clevo and it wasn't easy. Putting a stroked fuel injected wheezer is far easier ... but not the same
I suggest you contact a proper engineer rather than getting advice from the internet. In the end, no one here will be passing your car.

The emissions must comply with the year of manufacture of the car that motor came out of. In addition to this you are not able to put a motor from an older model car into a newer one. ie you can not put an xa windsor in an xd.

Gas is ok, why not go the xr8 motor, better fit and is injected, can run high flow cats and will be a neat job.

Did this 6 years ago so unless it's changed then this should help, although it was a 351 Windsor not Clevo, anyway long story short if you want it easy just straight LPG the engine. Remove your fuel tank in the process, V8 engine mounts, the chassis is effectively the same so they bolt straight up and you should be set.

Main reason for straight LPG is in order to pass emissions for the year built it's just easier to go gas. You could go with an injected late model Windsor but even then you would need to supply a Gas Analysis report to show that the engine meets emissions, more money and you can only get them from the EPA and they aint cheap.

As someone else said though the easiest way is to use an XD/E body with XF front panels, the front end you could have for maybe $200 for the bonnet, guards and bumper as they are everywhere at wreckers. The LPG-$1500-$2500, engineers report-depends on how much time he spends on your car but from memeory it was about $120 an hour plus the report and certificate are extra so could be well over $1000-$2000.

And some thing else i remember is that the XF was a carby ..
No I will not pass it unless you have the ok by vic roads.
sorry but r.w.c. and repairs is about 1/2 the income of the shop a week.
It is even easyr to go "straight " gas now .. Before you had to remove EVERYTHING to do with fuel.
now as the law states you have to just remove the fuel filler (so no refueling) and remove the fuel line to the carby/fuel pump ( so motor can not run on fuel)

You need to talk to vic roads and a r.w.station before you do anything .

A mate of mine has a 351C xf on straight lpg. the car is pretty standard as far as it goes, but came with a 20something long engineers report.

they tested everything and its all roses. so i doubt you will have much if any drama. That is always provided you dont get a monkey at vic roads, which is 99% of the battle anyway

I can easily get a RWC on a car I will never get an engineers certificate/report for. A RWC is no substitute.
The second you get a knowledgeable cop or get in an accident where there is any investigation, particularly by an insurance company.. you are screwed.

Thanks for the info guys. If i wasnt attached to the old girl i might be tempted to get an xe or xd that would make life a lot easier.
Well if i have to get a report done maybe i should go all out.... ive always wanted a 265 hemi turbo..

They had carby engines and also efi engines.

speak to archie robertson in bayswater. 97295677 he did the engineers report for the rhd conversion on a mates mustang so he should be able to tell you what you need to do. you can do the conversion with all ford parts so only the emissions and maybe the mods to the heater would be an issue. and from memory you must have 4wheel discs for a 351
