What educational requirements are needed to join the Police Force?
HSC right? Any specific subjects though? Thanks.

I am only aware of the requirements for the SA police force, and they cant be THAT much different...
You need year 12 (or equivalent), at least passes. No particular subject but things like Legal Studies and Justice type things are looked upon well. English is a good one and maybe even a language if you have done one before. But no, no specific requirements I dont think. You may need a first aid (emergency) certificate - I know you do in SA. You may also need to sit a typing test - I think here it was a minimum of 30wpm @ 98%. You need to have these things done before you apply so you can send them in with your application. Then, if your application is accepted, you go through all the testing and interview procedures before you can get in. May be different in NSW. A lot of applicants here actually have degrees too, so it is fairly competitive.

I was just wondering if Math was a requirement. Because I didn't take that as an elective for my HSC. I don't see why it would be, just confirming, thanks.

looking at the nsw pol atm group 4 qualifications in current manual uai of 66-79 or equivalent yr 12 score, you can also get in with a completed trade certificate (which is what im going to use when i apply, if i can get my fitness level back up. physical test isn't hard but isn't easy either)

Yeah as dan b said, fitness tests arent hard, but they're certainly not easy. To gain entry to the Queensland Police Force, one of the physical tests is completing a 2.4km course (jogging) in 12 minutes. Seems simple doesnt it. Try it ;) thats something I'm working on at the moment, and Im already rather athletic to begin with. Something tells me they only run those tests on police once. As soon as they get in they can let themselves go again, taken from the number of... soggy looking off dutymen you see comming home on the train.

I have friends (twins) who are involved in this at the moment. One has already graduated, and is now working, and her sister started the course at Goulburn last week.
If you have a degree you don't have to spend as much time in the academy as people who don't. I think it's 8 months. Though that might have changed now. (was true when the first sister started) The fitness test IS hard. My friends failed 6 times each. One girl in the now graduated friend's class, died after one of their fitness classes from a heart attack. (I'm not suggesting that is what caused it, just pointing out it happened). They have fitness classes every week, as well as their policing studies obviously. The food on campus is unedible. Curfew is 11pm. Classes start at 7.30am. You will be breath and/or drug tested randomly, and before weapons classes. Fail, and you are immediately removed from the program. Stealing people's running shoes and throwing them into the dam, or riding a police horse in the middle of the night after a few hours out drinking in town will also get you booted.

Please note, New South Wales has a Police SERVICE. Police Force is considered too angry and not acceptable by the hippies.
How old are you? If you are under 25, I would recommend you go live it up a while before joining. Good luck with your application.

I think it's a requirement to be at least 19 years of age anyway.

Hey, a good way to up your chances of getting your way in (or being placed higher on the order of merit I believe it's called here in Vic) would be to join either the Army Cadets or Air Force Cadets, or if you like wearing white, the Navy Cadets :hihi:. Being 17 you should probably get in quick as 17/18 is the cut off age for Air Force Cadets and not much longer for Navy and Army, I think there is also SES cadets as well but haven't heard much about them. There used to be police cadets here in Vic I believe but was scrapped for whatever reason. Out of curiosity, how tall are you? Is there an ideal height/weight for the police force nowadays : I may be interested in a career in Air Force/Police Force and wondering what's considered ideal, I'm about 181cm but will hopefully gain a few cm before I'm 18. (still 7 weeks til I'm 16) . Best of luck if you decide to apply.

Theres no real set out requirement list to join the NSWPF thats available to the general public. Its always changing with what flavour is in, like Commish Avery loving the whole university requirement, then life experience being a attractive feature and you always have the election boost.
I'd recommend a look at two uni courses. Theres Justice Studies (Policing) at Charles Sturt University at Bathurst, it fast tracks you through the Associate Degree in Policing Practice. And Policing at University of Western Sydney at Bankstown. But theres no fast tracking. Both are around the 65 UAI mark.

You actually need to have your full open license before you go to the academy, although you can apply on your greens if you will be off them at the intake.
i.e 21+ I've got another year to wait :(

if you are interested in learning things then perhaps as a military techie ? good money and out in a few short years with a good trade and the ability to earn really well , or jump in the Aarmy in and do a degree maybe even become an occifer .. certainly the subculture in the army I experienced is heaps better than the police scorn you get for being unable to stare logic in the face and ignore it or do the legal thing ignoring the moral implications no matter how stupid it appears , if you are an honest moral being the coppers will soon retrain you . Go Army |
