Default New P-Plate laws for victoria.

Hey guys n Girls

Ok no i'm assuming you have all heard about the new P-plate laws for victoria that come in on July1 2007?
if not heres a link to them: http://www.arrivealive.vic.gov.au/c_youngGLS_9a.html

now theres a serious problem here, the car i just bought has a V8 in it and i don't get my license until august. it was within the old restrictions but now in the new ones.

its not a quick motor either, an EA 5speed 6cyl could beat it, let alone a stock Focus.

also the rules were inforced in NSW and the road toll doubled WTF!?

seriously, the government worries to much about votes and not enough about what's right and what's wrong.

I'v emailed the Arrive Alive website, and informed them of my situation, i haven't gotten a reply as yet.

juest wondering what other people's thoughts are on the subject?

I think this line has the biggest impact...

"probationary licence holder will not be able to drive a vehicle if it has an engine that has been modified to increase its performance"

So ANYTHING modification made to your engine will have Mr Plod costing you money.

No exhaust mods
No cold air intakes
No k+n filters

Basically the engine has to look and sound bog stock on your P's to the Po-leese

Think of the ricers with pod filters and coffee can exhausts that you see that have P plates displayed...

This is just about giving coppers more power to combat hoons....plain and simple.

Do you mean you are only going for your p's after august? Just practice lots now and go for them before they come in, if i could do it over again i would. Ive passed on many good v8's i was going to buy, but couldnt drive them.

Ah you'll be right.

Just take of the V8 badges and put another muffler on it.
The cops won't know the difference.

These laws are only for those who get there license after July 1 though, yeah?

So it doesnt matter if you put a K&N Filter or whatever on if you have your P's before that date?

I have been driving on my P's for 2 years now. Two of the three cars I have owned in this time were V8 Fairlanes. I have never had a single issue with the police... never even been pulled over.

I have said it before, the police target bad driving attitudes, not P platers, V8s, ricers ect... If your car is roadworthy there isn't a problem.

As long as you dont draw attention to yourself, there wont be an issue.
Yes the P plate laws have changed since I got my licence 2 years ago, but I still stand by the fact that you wont get any unwanted attention unless you draw it to yourself.

If you already have your P's your fine, Its only if you get them AFTER July 1st that your going to have to watch out.
Im glad they have excluded those massively high performance Daihatsu Turbos etc.

I also think that having passenger restrictions was probably a good idea at the time, but when you think about it, if youve got say 4 people who want to go somewhere, then there 2 cars out there instead of the one?
If there the kind of people who want to do burnouts or drag etc, wouldnt that be more tempting?
No engine mods, doesnt matter, there going to push whatever car they have to its limits and beyond.
Just an excuse to raise a bit more money if you ask me.

meh bugger it i'll take the risk, my excuse is i had bought the car WELL before the new laws came in and i was unaware.
the cops down near me said they reckon its just a stunt and it's pointless as they will have to wait 3 years before they can start inforcing it as they will be pulling over P-platers who are not effected.

BTW for those asking, if you have your P's before July 1, no need to worry, your excluded.
i think it should be based on the time you get your L's personally because at the time i got my permit it was ONLY a power to weight and capacity to weight ratio.

so i bought a car abiding by those rules, not the ones that have just come in now.

I had a XR6 with performance mods as my first car, and then a EL XR8 at 19. According to the government, I should be dead right now.

What a joke, p platers who drive v8's in the first place usually are enthusiasts and have a certain respect for cars.

It's a sad day for all victorian p platers.

just wondering if anybody has seen the adds that they have on myspace?
the title it "control the V8" n then it turns into a bucking bull and you get bucked off.

WTF!? v8s are not like that unless you MAKE them to be, unlike the turbocharged jap cars. which really are out of control.

why do people have the perception that V8's are dangerous? most of the accidents aren't with V8 powered cars anyways?
most of them are jap jap mobiles!

this is doing my head in!!!

People who are already are on there p's are stil done under the old system. iv looked into this lol.. and according to another forum, that there is high, med and low mods ,like say a k&n panal filter is low with an exhaust system -which isnt really apart of the engine anyway- the med is like cams ect, high is turbos and superchargers, i dont think that cops would mind if ya put a exhaust system on your car, because they dont improve your performance drematicly (compaired to a supercharger of turbo) like if you have a 4cylinder or a 6cylinder car, the 4 with a turbo, cops would believe that the turbo will beat it because its a performance part. so i think that ya could get away with a exhaust system, in reason, and a k&n panal, and possibly internal engine mods because its pretty hard to detect them. they didnt say anything about gears

i have to say you were a softie as a p plater (joke)

when i was on my p plates i had/drove

1 x twin turbo 400 chev powered torana
1 x 253 powered gemini (not mine but it may have well been)

i used to get pulled over 2 odd times week to see what was under the bonnet ohhhhhhh how things have changed

i would hate to be a p plater now

ill have to buy another car for helen to drive when she gets her licence

so i guess im not happy

and with the passanger restrictions, the nsw gov introduced them and the death toll actually rose because more p platers were inclined to take more cars out at nite. i think that they are trying to force us to drive lawnmowers, because 'compaired to a v8 they are less powerful so they will not plant it going round a corner and not slide out' sorry johnny but i have seen stock lancers do that on roads in the dry!

hahaa this cracked me up...

Quote:
a turbocharged or supercharged engine (except diesel powered vehicles);
certain high performance six cylinder cars. An official list of nominated vehicles will be published on this website from 1 July 2007. In the interim it is expected to include the following vehicles:
the BMW M and M3,
Nissan 350Z,
Porsche (all models), and
Mercedes Benz SLK350.
Vehicles which are excluded from these restrictions are:

Turbocharged or supercharged diesel powered vehicles (without engine performance modifications);
all models of the Smart car, produced by Mercedes Benz; and
nominated vehicles with low powered turbocharged or supercharged engines. These vehicles include the following vehicles:
Suzuki Cappucino 2D Cabriolet Turbo 3 cylinder 689cc, and
Daihatsu Copen L880 2D Convertible 4 cylinder 659 cc.
last time i checked the suzuki runs on petrol not diesel. i think about .05% of p platers drive these cars...

I don't think they said anything about diesel..... It's more the tiny capacity (689cc) that qualifies them for exemption...

You can apply for exemption for low end turbos such as an Audi A4 with the 1.8L (?) turbo engine.

Which passenger restrictions are you talking about in NSW? If it's the no under-25 past eleven pm. rule, that hasnt come in yet....

Im so frustrated with these poor efforts to save lives for something so valuable, you would think they would try more than another bandaid fix.

If i lose a friend to our roads due to bad road condition and lack saftey, i'll spit in steve brack's face, this is pathetic.

I think if you owned the car before the rules come in you are ok with it. Easiest way to confirm is to check with Vicroads (or whatever you call it there). Or just move to NSW and get your license now. ;)

the more i think about it the more trouble i think i am going to have :(

looks like i'll be buying an E-series car or a B....

not happy :( infact i actually feel like crying cause i had my heart set on an XA or XC for my first car.....

can't the government seriously find a better way to save lives on our roads?
also, isn't the road toll the lowest its ever been (% wise)?

If you own the car now and can proove it, then go to Vicroads and seek an exemption.
