Default Clutch Help

Hi All,

Have had some clutch shuddering lately and a noise that's been developing and my mate who used to be a mechanic said tonight that the clutch is stuffed.

I could feel the clutch pulsating under my foot for a few days now, the noise (a sort of fan noise) has got worse today, and even in the last few kays driving home tonight, less than 10 kays from my mate's place.

Bum!

I'm not putting in a standard one in again. They are just too weak.

What are my options? What are the ratings for clutches? Standard, then what?

What should I expect to pay?

Anyone know of a good clutch place in the Northern Suburbs?

I would really like to get this done on Saturday if I can, but it may need to wait until next week.

Superoo, I may have to take you up on that firewall strengthening much sooner than I had anticipated! LOL!

GK

get a pressure plate with more clamping force (ie 3000pounds and up) and an organic clutch plate with coushined centre (better for daily driving). look at the excedy range, they got some nice replacement options.

I've just been on their site actually Chief.

from memory i woudl expect prices between 600 to 800

i bought an excedy HD with a 4000lb pressure plate, cermic 5puk clutch plate coushined for $795 from horsepower in a box (that was for a 99WRX), interesting to drive thou, hence suggesting a organic based one for daily driving

I just installed a KING KOBRA clutch into my XR8 last week and it feels awsome. And i have heard rumours that they don't crack the firewalls while using the kobra clutch, something to do with the pressure plate? It was around 800 as well i think from memory.

i wouldnt hold my breath, the design from factory is flawed, the firewall is basically not strong enough to hold up to the strain of a std pressure plate (1500lb If i remember correctly).

I highly doubt that. I bent the pedal box to buggery and cracked the firewall with a standard clutch, so I can't see how one with more clamping pressure could put less strain on those components.

GK, your problem doesn't sound like the clutch is stuffed, IMO. If your clutch is slipping and your foot is off the pedal, then it's stuffed. I've heard of clutch shudder, but don't know what causes it. EvilCheif's idea sounds like the best place to start.

Cheers

I just spoke to a guy about Exedy clutches and installation near my place. I need to ring a few others though for price comparison.

All up it would come to between $545-660 depending on a few bits. He actually didn't recommend the heavy duty clutch, but the XR kit which has 7% more clamping force.

He said of course that he'd sell me whatever I wanted, but he reckons the Exedy pressure plate/cover has the hardened fingers, which is where the stock clutches often struggle.

Chief is correct I think, the fingers are bent or a few are broken, although apparently that's pretty hard to do! LOL!

I really am beginning to wish I'd just got a reco auto done, I've had a pretty frustrating and costly run with this car.

I was even musing of fixing the clutch and selling it and getting a new Fiesta! Yep I know, sounds like I need some serious help! LOL!

Even though I've said that, a Fiesta would only be about $10 a week more to run. I guess though, I wouldn't mod it and save bucks elsewhere.

In any case, the clutch needs attention and quickly, and I'll chat to you Roo again about your "you beaut" firewall job.

Cheers,

GK

I'm glad to hear you're happy with it. Good job.

Right now, I'd be unbelievably happy with an auto 8 or I6 LOL!

Just called another bloke, $600 all up. He actually told me to check both the firewall and pedal box first!
