I drive an AU Fairlane ghia with the 4L 6cyl. I wanna up the power as much as i can without blowing it just yet. Any suggestions??? I allready have a performance exhaust and decent POD filter. Got about 190rwhp... What Gets me the MOST power possible without spending heaps and turbo/supercharging it. ?? Cheers Lads |

Start opening the engine up if if you dont wanna sc/turbo it.
A cam (400) plus tune (1k) and associated gear with that would be the next step i would assume. Although many will argue LSD and diff gears. Depends on the budget mate Are you sure its puttin out 190rwkw.. seems like a lot for a stock motor with an exhaust.

Still seems like a lot. Must go pretty hard then, yyou sure it wasnt engine kw?
Theres a few threads and build threads where turbo/superchargers where done. Just form word of mouth around here, Raptor make a good s/c and SNORT make good turbo and s/c kits

extractors, cam and tune.
You do realise that a performance exhaust and any engine work is illegal for p-platers also yeah?

I say leave the engine work till ya off ya P's. Spend money on diff gears and a possibly a 2500rpm high stall, invest in a tranny cooler and look at an electronic shift kit. That will get ya moving that barge off the lights a bit better than average. Even though it wont add you any power, the high stall and diff gears will make you feel like you have extra grunt.

I dont want to sacrifice my topspeed (which is F'in limited anyway) for a slightly quicker launch... i have driven turbo'd skylines with less of the line performance as my car... :/ Kick my car when the turbo kicks in tho. haha |

Head work and cam. I'd like to see a cop pick that on the side of the road.

I was just reading through this and was wondering where in the QLD rules does it stipulate that you can't put an exhaust onto a car while on P plates?
I've had both cars with modded exhausts and never been pinged for it (only when we decided I should open up a rusting muffer in the old holden "coz it would sound fully tuff"... cops thought it sounded like **** apparerently ) |

ANY performance mod is illegal in victoria. ANY. that includes a stocker with a pod filter.
however you will find most cops will either turn a blind eye or just give you a warning about not being silly in your 'dads car' ;) as soon as they see a turbo or charger under the bonnet however, youre gonna get pinged hard. dont be a moron and floor it in traffic or down the places cops like to sit on saturday nights and you should usually avoid being pulled over at all, much less fined for illegally driving a performance vehicle as for mods? how much do you wanna spend on fuel? if i had a stock car again id probably change the diff gears, intake, exhaust and probably a 3k stall. perhaps id get a tune to go with it if i wanted to spend the money. cam? you want to sound cool? go for it. will your car be faster? choose the right cam and a GOOD tuner then hell yes it will be. realise that a cam will cost you around 3-400 for a regrind and shims or about 5-600 for a billet. you will need better valve springs or you might as well not bother, theres another 200. timing gear to customise the cam, around 150. then you will either put it in yourself in which case you will have to pay for the mechanic to spend time fiddling with the timing to get the most out of it or you will have to pay for it to be installed and also for time spent playing with the timing. theres a good couple of hundred easily. then realise for the rest of your life in that car you will: 1. cringe when you have to sit there and idle at lights or crossings as you feel the car shake your hard earned out the exhaust as your car hates being at low rpms 2. probably have to change your plugs more often (i know i do because they foul faster) 3. add on a 50% increase to your weekly fuel bill. sometimes in traffic my car gets to 22ishL/100km if i have to drive around the main street and wait for a train, go through a drive through. im sure most of your middle aged falcons with bolt ons are probably getting 15L/100km in similar traffic dont get me wrong i absolutely LOVE my car and what its become, ive spent too much time and effort to turn around and say you know what, im gonna put a stock cam back in because i cant afford petrol. i just have to stretch it further every week and enjoy it whilst i can because i wont be young forever and when its on song its a bloody good car. on the plus side i get my best economy when im driving slightly more aggressive than normal because the cars most efficient acceleration is a bit higher in the rpms and when i hammer it for a while it really doesnt get much worse than when im in traffic so theres not a great deal stopping me from having fun with it mod within your means! you probably cant even make an educated decision on what you want at this stage but i suggest going to read a few build threads, check out the blue lagoon (themonty), shav's charged au (blueoval) and stavs wagon. theres some i have missed but check out what these guys have done as they impart much wisdm in their threads as to the past and futures of their cars as they learn more about money and breaking stuff as they go anyways good luck with whatever you choose and sorry for such a long comment!
