Series 1 you should be able to get for around that price,
Series 2 an 3 go for a bit more then that, Also depends on the condition, how many kms on the clock etc

Series 1 you should easily be able to get one for those dollars.. But this is the least desierable model.
Series 2 will be a harder ask, and you will probly have to make some compromises on quality or milage etc.. Series 3 would be a stroke of luck at those $$, unless it was a mega milage and in very average state.. Try to save up more to tip in upto around 7.5k and you should get a decent series 2 and may snag a Series 3 if your lucky.. On average, decent series 3 xr6's seem to hang around the 10k asking mark. Especially if you want one with a rebel bodykit.. Mind you at 10k, Iv been looking at several diffrent series 3 manual, rebel kitted XR8's in pretty decent nick with lower klms (below 150k klms)..

Whilst some may disagree with me here, but id make sure its the HP model, not the VCT.
Series 1 will be a piece of cake in that price range, private sales will get you a far better buy. |

Nothing wrong with the series 1's. I prefer them. Even like the look of the series 1 nose cone/grill over the series 2. IMO HP motors are much better than the VCT motors.
I want to buy one next year, strip it, cage, buckets, harness, dog box, coilovers/stiff swaybars, boost, mini spool and different sets of tyres for the occasions. Drag/drift/burnouts/track/fun car for under 15k if you do alot of work yourself. Series 1's are the lightest, and can get down to 1250-1300kg when stripped, most have live axle rear end and are very basic.

If you can stretch the funds a little it is definitely worth the extra to get a nice S2 mate.

I have a VCT and im pretty happy with it. 5spd.LSD IRS it takes corners pretty awesomely as well.
only 'regret' is you cant really 'drop' a cam in it like you can a HP motor. |

i had a stock au1 xr6 hp which got written off sadly. i had a series 2 front bar, spoiler, taillights, silver xr badging and silver pin stripping (perfect s2 replica).
Performance wise it went noticably better then the BA 6's and 90's V8's from both ford and holden. i now have a ba xr8 and stil think that 0-40 the AU would stil match it for pace. If i were to get in an au again it would definitly be a hp xr6. If you find a good s1 that is too cheap to resist then i would snap it up as for approx $1000 you can have it looking like a s2 |
