Hey guys,was just reading the previous post regarding the spark plug sump plug,awesome!!
JC mentioned the magnetic sump plug being sold on ebay that is supposed to hold all the metal particles and keeps em from floating in the syrup? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Magnetic-Drai...QQcmdZViewItem what do you think,im due to change my oil next week so was thinking of getting one of these sump plugs and the pureone filter,I stuffed up last time and brought the Penrite 15 mineral when I have been using the semi synth Penrite,I have noticed the mineral oil has gone black alot quicker too, will it hurt if I go back to the semi synth as I have heard some conflicting views on it,is it worth giving the magnatec a go? Thanks guys your all a great help to me,I don't mean to crap on too much but I love this forum as im not even a mechanics shlong and I can now do the basics. |

I reckon they'd be worth a go. Only 10 bucks and a little postage. I guess after the first oil change you'd see soon enough what is escaping the filter.

Had one on my AU XR8.They work really well, just dont get one if seeing metal in your sump scares you!!! Its more of a metallic paste that gets collected on it.

Just bought one!
I'll stick it in the Futura Wagon which has done 2,000 kays on the current oil. I'm changing the oil again in another 3,000 so I'll know soon enough. The wagon is now up to 152,000kays so it's done a little work. We'll see how this thingy goes, although we've already got some good reports coming in. Cheers, GK

has the au got an alloy sump? if not just get a magnet and stick it in the bottom of the sump stick it to the inside of the pan.

You could also magnatize yourself an original steel sump plug i suppose, just stick it on the back magnet of a huge woofer/speaker or something stongly magnatized for a while.

I araldited one of those small super magnets to my sump plug, works a treat. I never really get any filings, rather as shep mentioned just a silver paste like gunk on it

A lot of Jap cars have magnetic sump plugs standard. Another good idea would put some of your old paper speaker magnets over/on the oil filter.

get and old speaker and break a chunk of the magnet off the back , then stick that on the top of your sump plug .

go to toys are us and buy one of those magnetic kits kids play with(Magnetics). Break a plastic tab thing and use that magnet theyre small enuff to fit but damn they are super strog for its size. ive had it for over a year now and the heat hasnt affected it at all.

My experience has lead me to believe that magnetic plugs are a valuable tool in a preventive maintenance program. It allows for an "inside" view of what is occurring internally within a component or compartment. Many large earthmoving equipment manufacturers have used magnetic plugs for this purpose as some compartments are not filtered (eg: front hub oils, final drive oils). Regular inspections assist in determining the state of the compartment and the degree of wear.
No matter how good the oil and filteration system is, as long as you use your vehicle, there will always be particles suspended or settling at the base of a compartment. If you can assist in removing them to help keep it clean then that is a good thing. If only one could find a magnetic plug for unfiltered compartments like diffs etc ............. or should just take others advice here and fabricate one. Food for further thought. |

If you could get one that has two magnetic poles in it and have it wired up to a light in the car and if any metal particles are large enough they will bridge the gap between the poles and cause the light to come on.
Got them on planes they are called a chip detector. Just in case anythign big decides to separate you can turn the car off before it shreads itself.

I have dealt with this seller he is very reputable and is a ford employer (engineer i think),he is very switched on and also sells the stainless steel BA-BF airbox logos and the updated scuff plates and also known as the mesh man as he also has the ba bf lower grilles which are anodised i highly recomend him! please note i am just one of his happy customers cheers
