My Xr8 220kw that i brought new in 2001 has had 2 water pumps and needs another one now.
Is this a common problem. What would cause them to leak on the seal every time. It has done 77,000 km's, Rego is (XR 8220) has 171rwkws, and been no problem other than the water pump issue. |

Haven't heard of it being a common problem. There is the odd one that has had a new pump fitted for one reason or another...

Hmm....that is curious. Not something I had heard of happening to anyone else either (not to say it doesn't happen though)
What have they done for each fix? Replace the whole pump assembly, or just the seal in the original pump?

The first one they changed at a service, next one I fitted, and I will fit the next one as well.

Are you using nulon coolant?
It's the only nulon product I don't use as i found it makes leaks appear where they never have before. |

dont know if this will help but you might try some water pump lubricant in the coolant, ...... i`m wondering if the radiator has good coolant/inhibitor in it?? , i bought a pump (reco) for my truck .............the impellar came of while idling :, dodgey ones are out there for sure, i`d try a different brand good luck with it.

Could be just a bad batch...
My original one let go at 60,000 kms, which i was very surprised with, replaced it with a generic one and has been good so far 20000 kms later. maybe you should look at a better quality one, or check for other issues with your cooling system, could also be a bit of crap floating around in there, what coolant are you using? |

Is it possible to do away with the mechanical pump???
I once found a web site that touted a small horsepower increase (like 4-6kw, or was it HP?) when you removed the pulley for the pump and placed an electronic water pump in the system somewhere connected to a thermostat??? But either way if yours is leaking that has to be fixed anyway.... |

On older cars with traditional V'd belts, repeated waterpump failure was usually a sign of overtight belts. On a modern serp-belt I'd doubt this is the problem, but might be worth checking if the same person is installing each pump

200 kw's at the wheels would have noticable change...Good effort....Wait until it loosens up, go burnoff some GEN3's.

You wouldn't happen to have uinder drive pulleys would you, I've heard they sometimes give premeture failure due to it spining more times then it would from factory.
