Default New CAI in progress

Thought I'd throw up some pics of what will be my shaker CAI. all that I need to do now is bolt some sheet metal to the base of the air cleaner, then bolt the shaker to the sheet metal. Hopefully have it sorted and the bonnet cut next week.

Brilliant idea!! The best way to get cold air into the engine. The only thing is the legality of a shaker on our cars.Despite that its a good mod, looks good.

nice idea and it does look good but i cant understand how it can be legal when its illegal to have an exposed pod filter under a bonnet but its ok to have an exposed round filter sticking out the top?

Its not realy exposed, it will be boxed into the shaker. There are plenty of older cars around with same style of aircleaner sitting above the bonnet with a $20 scoop over the top and thats legal, so whats the diff between that and what I'm doing?

No idea, I'd be thinking with less ducting to the t/b it would have to be better than other cai's but thats a guess. I will be taking my car down the track and putting it on the dyno before and after so give it a week or 2 and I'll post some numbers

What's the diamater of your piping? It looks to be about 50mm. Its a shame tight mandrel curves are hard to find to because it would make the whole assembly much neater.

50mm would probably be less restrictive then standard pipe. but its 2.5 inch, will be upgrading to 3inch eventually. It doesn't look all that neat, but once fitted the pipe won't be visable

Id say the biggest difference will be at WOT at around a hundred K's. All that air forcing itself in, it will sound awesome. Might even get a pound or two a square inch of boost, lol.

Nice Idea for a 6. Just from my experience with my shaker on my old XE , your going to need like a deep dish well below the shaker under the hood. As nice as the shakers are and the nice performace boots they give , they gather alot of water in the resevoir below the skaker ( look at a full original shaker setup , it looks like you have the top half but not the bottom deep dish ) and need to be emptyed occasionaly after driving in heavy rain. If you dont build a deep dish resevoir under the shaker (below the filter) you will end up just sucking a good majority of rain/water through the filter and into your engine ! (with no resevoir below the shaker the rain/water will build up inside the top of the shaker as it has nowhere else to go - and end up being sucked into the filter) , you'll also need the rubber seal that goes around the bottom edge of the top part of the shaker that you have - to stop water/rain going under the hood around the shaker. That being said too , i hope you measured your piping distance properly so the height of the shaker will sit according to the bonnet , so the rubber seal will push ap against the bonnet propperlly to seal the gap around the shaker , but not to hard up that the shaker can't shake ! .

Anyway , that was just a few suggestions , im not bagging the idea or anything , i like it , let us all know how it goes ;) . cheers

Fantastic! XR6-VCT-2000 has made some good points to take note of, though I would imagine a tiny little bit of water mixed with the air and fuel will actually help keep the mixture cool (like some turbo and supercharged setups use) and will help with the combustion process, but too much, and you will get compression/vapour lock in the cylinder, and the car will die.

I'll be interested to see the final result, and also a how to with some measurements so we can all copy you! Lol - but seriously, measurements, prices etc would be great - this looks like it could be a useful setup on the 6's, and easily adapted to the 8s as well.

You wouldnt even need a rubber seal around it in Melbourne lol it doesnt rain anyways. Looking good though will be interested in a How To aswell from mounting it, to cutting the bonnet and bracing it.

Thats good that they let you. In NSW they are a no no unfortunately.Ford tried to do it recently and were knocked back by the rta. Bit unfair when you see those wrx's with the filing cabinet on the bonnet. Id have one in a heart beat otherwise..

Because I'm using a pod filter it sits back a bit, so rain doesn't appear to affect it. I have driven in heavy rain with no probs, when I got home I checked if any water was pooling in the base and it was dry. After I 1st installed the setup the car coughed at certain revs for about 3days til the puter learnt. The only prob I noticed was it did take a bit to start, but after a custom tune that was fixed.
stockoau...I think your setup looks awsome, however I think it may foul on the tappet cover, and if you lift the setup on top of the cover the shaker will sit to high up on the bonnet, unless you have a high series one.I also would use an oiled filter for sure, as the others have said.
The induction roar has to be heard to be truly appreciated and the throttle response improved out of sight.. If anyone is in melb and going to the FPV open day I will be there with the XR6 & XR8 club of Qld, come up and say g'day. I have no probs going through the finer details of my setup, hopefully someone with more engerineering skills come come up with something better and share their knowledge for improvements.
As for cost, I got the shaker top and rubber skirt from Ebay for $150, used 4mm thick alloy for the base which I got for free from work, purchased a flame blanket from Bunnings for $15 to use as a heat shield on the outside and inside of alloy base, 1 can of black heat retardant paint for $10(I sprayed the inside and outside of base over the top of blanket). Cut the hole in the bonnet my self, purchased rubber to go around cut from Clark rubber for $20...so all up approx $200.
I never had a dyno before the shaker, but with just paccies and 2 1/2 in exhaust and shaker, was pulling 137rwkw before tune and ran 15.051 1/4 mile, after a haltech interceptor and tune now have 150.7 rwkw but have not yet been back to strip.
